Christmas Card to Friends
A friend of mine, Grant Harold, sent me a song he wrote for Chrismas this year, and I liked its simple message. So I rang my friend Nathan Deceasar and asked if he wanted to join me in turning it into a card for friends. Grant and Nathan and I call our little trio "Group Hug"
I hope these holidays have been a time that you've gotten to share with people you love.

Damn this is great work! I love how the origami animals turned out. Fooled me when I watched it and didn't realize it was 3D until I checked out the WIP images. I thought it was a stop mo/mograph combo. Great job you guys.

Happy to have fooled you! The origami masters who made the original designs are amazing. Do a search for origami on flickr sometime and lose a few hours looking at the mind boggling designs that can be made by folding paper.

And i will receive a great inspiration. :D
  •
  • i love it too, maybe one day will use C4D seem like a very good soft...

    Great job!
  • Stephen Fitzgerald 1 month ago
Be careful with your assumptions. C4D is great software and was used on parts of this, but this spot was created 95% in Lightwave 3d. Many roads lead to Rome.

I really love the cutout technique you used! It reminds me of Takeshi Murata's flash waves. Would you mind explaining how you did it? My best guess is booleans and alpha.
  • Stephen Fitzgerald 1 month ago
Thanks! The two techniques have a lot in common. You are right that it is a lot of alphas and booleans at the core of it. There are some very very early "frames" here: mono-motion.com/?p=596#more-596

im wondering if lightwave's booleans are more stable than maya's because in maya doing something like that where you are cutting into so many different pieces of geometry with booleans would definitely crash it.... however you could use alphas in textures on each individual sphere... which is what you might have done, but it seems like if booleans were stable enough it would be faster to move shapes through the spheres and use booleans to subtract where the shapes are.... could you elaborate a little please... i am very curious
  • Stephen Fitzgerald 1 month ago
In LW you can't animate a true polygonal boolean, but there is a shader that allows you to select inside/outside objects and outputs transparency/clip info to each object to create the "boolean".dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/nodes/Additionnal_Nodes_2.html

Most of what you see isn't booleans at all in the literal sense, its animated transparency, or more specifically, animated clip maps, which render faster.

If I had to describe this effect I'd probably call it "volumetric cutting" instead of booleans, and that is the biggest hint to the technique right there.
