During a trip to Ishinomaki in November, 2011, we interviewed a number of survivors and let them tell us about how the recovery is going.

This is the first edit of an ongoing project. there is a blog at thenandnow.tv where updates about the project will be posted. Stop on by.

A deeply moving doc, but it is strange that one interviewee apparently mixes Kadonowaki Elementary (the large charred building) with another school. Students at Kadonowaki were in fact successfully evacuated (mediaship.ne.jp/~elskado, insidejapanblog.com/2011/09/29/6-months-on-part-3-kadonowaki-elementary-school). The school with lots of casualties was Okawa Elementary, an entirely separate establishment.

Director Paul Johannessen says, "No mix up. You are right in that the school was successfully evacuated. It was after this that more people, families, came to the school as it was an official meeting place in the case of an earthquake. It was these people who perished in the fire. The local media decided not to cover that event at the time - it was considered too traumatic."

Extremely touching, especially as I work with It's Not just Mud and know these people and places. I have passed it on to a lot of people to keep spreading the word.

    keep up the great work

You've done great work with this. Glad we could play a small part. Really nice job with the music, as well.

Looking forward to seeing more footage in a longer format!

Thank you. That's all I can manage to say right now as this piece resonates slowly through my entire being.

Very nicely done! It's so sad to see these resilient survivors being treated so shabbily by their own government.

Beautiful...very beautiful. Good to see a more recent perspective on Ishinomaki than the feature documentary, Pray For Japan: The Film, that I was Assistant Editor on and am currently doing Social Media/New Media for. We're linking you on our Facebook and we hope to figure out a way to link you on our film's official website. You have a lot to be proud of...these people need to be able to speak. We on Team P4J are doing just that, you are too. We need to keep the people of Tohoku in the public eye.

Very beautifully shot! May I ask what equipment you used to make this. Very well done.

@Kevin, we shot on a Nikon D7000 and a Canon 60D. Audio recorded on a Rode shotgun through a Sound Devices preamp onto a Tascam DR100.
