It has been said that, “By the work, one knows the workman.” If this is true, then my dear friend Gareth Stehr has some serious issues. His methodically planned pieces of art are overwhelmingly bright, perversely irreverent, and almost always tie back into a central theme of death. But in the same light, his work shows something that I feel is often overlooked. There’s a patience about it; a calmness not expected when you’ve seen him throwing his body at pavement for years on end. His work is clean, unlike his beard which he wears like a trophy strapped to his chin. It’s his contrast; the dynamic of interior and exterior, both equally as honest and hard to look away from.

I recently spent a day in LA with Gareth as he created, “No Equal,” an original piece of artwork which will be hung at CHAPTER HQ. He has definitely got a system worked out. The printshop has handled his work for years, and the hardware store employees know him by name. The weather was shit and the lighting was dismal, but “Gary” didn’t even notice. By the day’s end he had created something truly epic, all with a meticulous attention to detail and finesse, which I hadn’t expected to find. He’s an interesting creature.
