Flying without an engine makes for spectacular views. Filmed with an HV20 and compressed to Apple TV specifications.

That'd probably scare the shit out of me now. But, if I knew how to fly, this would be amazing.

really amazing. what's that hiss sound that happens every 5 seconds or so? P.S., Vimeo specs are higher than Apple TV specs ;) You should reupload at 1280x720!

I think it might be the release of compressed air. Probably for breathing or pneumatic control of the flaps.

The sound is the pilot breathing with a pulse demand oxygen system made by Mountain High (http://www.mhoxygen.com). Originally designed for mountain climbers these are small and light units that provide very efficient use of oxygen. Sailplanes and other non-pressurized aircraft flying at higher altitudes rely on compressed oxygen (not air) for the pilot and crew.

well first of all it looks like a glider(no engine) most gliders have that string on the windshield to really see what the wind is doing on the outside of the aircraft.
and also that beeping noise is a vertical speed indicator to tell how many feet up or down a minute he is going.

It is an Alexander Schleicher (http://www.alexander-schleicher.de) ASH-26E motorglider.
The engine is normally only used for the sailplane to self launch. It is flying here as a sailplane. The normally aspirated engine would provide no climb assistance at the ~13k feet altitude of Mt. Ritter. For more information on sailplanes and gliding see ssa.org.

Thanks for all the nice comments. That footage was taken by my friend Kempton Izuno, who now has a very nice site with more flights and more details. See
