Loneliness, detached, overwhelmed, fascinated, homesick - a year of travelling around the globe on business trips.

I flew 6 times around the world, spent 1.5 weeks (net) in airplanes 2011 and collected shots the whole year for this project.

I walked for hours around airports to get the one shot, got nearly arrested at Chicago O'Hare but had some good luck too!

Filmed at Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing, Chicago, Houston, Dubai, Frankfurt and my home - airport Vienna.

Shot on Lumix GH1 and GH2 (both hacked), by making use of the ETC mode on the GH2 I was able to get up to 3200mm equiv. focal length.

Hope you enjoy this!

Wow, you really get around! Very nice piece and the music suits it perfectly. Your "landing" shots are great and the time lapses were as well. The wind on the lake made it look like a large sheet of plastic!

    Thanks for sharing!

Wow, some of the best "GH" footage I've seen to date. Well done!

Nice shots, but some of them showed noise. I wonder why some shots made at low light are noisy and some are not? Maybe GH-s also have these sweet ISO values?
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 month ago
Well, the reason is that some of the shots are at extreme focal lengths - up to 3200mm. These were really flat (low contrast) and I had to push them hard in post. Then the noise came up.

A really great project, Gunther - illustrates your work life beautifully ... airport, hotels, cars ... around the world, yet always the same, always on the surface.

I am amazed how far you push your GH2 with your bag of rice :-) ... I almost can't believe you still don't use a tripod ... beautiful work all around!

As I mentioned before, would be great if you tried another more subtle music track to illustrate the loneliness of traveling even more. This is very bombastic and doesn't 100% fit the message you want to convey.

Will you try the Driftwood Hack for the GH2? Philip's shootout showed that it is absolutely amazingly sharp ...
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 month ago
    Dear Nino,

Thank you very much for your feedback already during post production!!

I agree about the music track. I am thinking about a second, very different version using also the comments from Peter.

At the moment unfortunately I cannot try anything as my GH2 is for repair at Panasonic for more than two months already.
Hope to get it back soon....
  • Allaboutmemories 1 month ago
What happened to your GH2 mate?? 2 months ?? They(@ pani) should send you not only 1 but 2 new ones on the spot instead and add you to their payroll as well. Your videos with this camera in your hands are beyond ANY ad video they've ever done.
  • Nino Leitner plus 1 month ago
2 months is really crazy Gunther. (Then again, Sony made me wait 6 months for my EX3.)

    Is this a warranty issue?
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 month ago
I have no clue what it is. Camera was dead all of a sudden, wouldn't power on. Haven't heard anything apart from "will arrive in the next few days". Am hearing that since months.
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 month ago
    Got it back repaired! Yeah!

After watching this video sure has been worth all those hours of flight, hotels, waiting in airports so far away from home. Amazing images.

Those Lumix are great in your hands...

Beautifully shot and very personal piece Gunther. Steady hands on your camera too. I would have loved to have heard a narrator track from you about your emotions as you traveled alone. Sort of like a diary. Now that the film is complete you could perhaps sit back, write something and track it!

Thanks Gunther - great footage nicely assembled into a terrific travel log.
I was going to ask how you how you kept the camera so steady in the cars and on the trains but i guess from an earlier post its it's a bag of rice!
    Cheers

    really fine shots, gunther!
are the scenes after 0:39 time lapses or normal videos at higher speed?
    which lenses did you use?
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 month ago
    This is a time lapse with 1 sec exposure. I used the 20mm f1.7 pancake, the 14-140mm kit lens, a Vivitar Series 1 35 - 85mm f2.8 and a Panagor 70-200mm f3.8 with a 2x extender.

    Hey Gunter...frohes neues Jahr :)
Toll geworden, tolle Schüsse, aber mir persönlich ist der Score viel zu episch, passt nicht so ganz zum urbanen drumherum. Oboen passen halt besser zum Grand Canyon;)...dennoch....-> Film gefällt:)

Gunther, you're the man, plain and simple. Wish I could've met up with you that day you were shooting at o'Hare...This piece was very inspiring. I liked the majestic choice of music, personally.

When are you going to stop messing around with your other job and just take up filmmaking for a living?

    Thanks for the inspiration.
  • Adonis Pulatus plus 1 month ago
I totally share your view, Andrew!
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 month ago
    Dear Andrew, Adonis,

haha, thanks for the nice comments!
My problem is (the typical one), that I don't think I would earn enough as a filmmaker to feed my family. But it's definitely something which is somewhere back in my mind ;-).

I would have really loved to meet you back in O'Hare. But we'll definitely have another chance someday!
