This collection of timelapses was shot throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana from September through November 2011.

Shot with a Canon 60d and Tokina 11-16mm. There are a couple go pro shots as well. Shot as raw files, batch processed in Lightroom 3, exported as jpegs from Lightroom, and then compiled in Quicktime Pro 7 and exported from there as 5k pro res video files, and then finally edited in FCPx on a full hd timeline.

Special thanks to Jonathan Adams who contributed a couple of the shots, and a big thanks to Tad Hutchinson for providing the audio for this piece. Track title "array"

    10/10 ! This is FANTASTIC !
What where your camera settings to picture the Milky Way, like on the first sequence ? (as I can see, landscape doesn't move so you didn't needed a motorized tripod head !?)
  • Matt Ziniel plus 1 month ago
    Thanks a lot!

Just shoot with a wide open aperture, and I usually shoot 15 to 30 second exposures

    THanks Matt !
I've never been able yet ... I'm gonna try again with my 50/1.8 with these exposure times at 100ISO !
  • Matt Ziniel plus 1 month ago
You will need to use a much higher iso than 100 when shooting stars, or else a much longer exposure time, but that will cause yours stars to trail. Good luck!

Hey man great shots and nicely composed. Any info on your RAW workflow through final cut? Because you're using FCX it can take a RAW timelapse without exploding!?
  • Matt Ziniel plus 1 month ago
Thanks! I left out a step in my workflow. I will update the description.

This is neat. the amount of intra-frame motion with the clouds, coupled with your camera movements, creates a level of dynamism that time-lapse videos usually don't match.

    Matt, this is sweet.
I never could figure out how to take pictures of stars like that as a timelapse and without getting star trails. Are you bumping the ISO up to do this? What is your shutter/aperature at to do this so you don't get trails. Also do you have a motor that rotates or moves while you are taking your moving timelapse shots? Thanks man, good work!
  • Matt Ziniel plus 1 month ago
high iso, long exposures, wide open. The wider the angle of the lens the longer exposure you can have without trails.
