Short film of a trip to Seahouses, a fishing village in Northumberland, England.

The film is shot with Sony EX-1 overcranked at 50fps. Vision was to achieve a model village type feeling with a tilt focus effect.

Jon - I love the way this looks!

I spent many private, personal retreats while I was living in London up that way - where was this exactly? I miss England so very much...

Thanks Dan - Seahouses is on the east coast about 50 miles from the Scottish border.

Well done. The toy effect is very effective. By the last frame I was hoping for a longer reel.
You might want to try varying the amount of blur to get various degrees of toyness.

Thanks for feedback - definitely want to try different degrees of blur. Also, I think the effect is most effective when there's movement.

love the colors. you are making me want to go out and get some footage to tiltshift.

Cheers Aaron - yeah the tilt shift is addictive and quite mesmerising - its just difficult to find a high place to shoot - there's not too many skyscrapers/flats where I live.

It really gives Sea Houses a different feel to it. Its now a sea side toy town. Very nice indeed.

I've not been to Sea Houses since I was a kid with me Nana. I remember the smell of fresh fish and the tasty chips drenched in vinegar, hmnn happy days :)

Tilt shift is a good effect Jon especially with the heavy saturation - gives it that 'Hornby' appeal ;-)

btw, like the little time lapse sequence at the beginning, do you plan to do more ?
  • Jon Lindsay plus 10 months ago
I had to treat myself to fish and chips while filming up there - mmmm.

Yeah I'm experimenting with the timelapse. I'm trying to achieve a HDR effect. Basically taking 3 exposures of full motion video and playing around with tonal mapping (as opposed to stills) - not had too much joy yet!

    :)

HDR can be achieved in a few ways Jon. With video, if you have access to After Effects, try the HDR Compander - great for adding depth, but you will have to experiment with other filters to enhance the colour/tonal range. For stills, I use Photomatix Pro - it takes ages to render a decent sequence but is well worth the effort when you get it spot on ;-) Here's a link to some pre-sets I've used to get you started:

The trick is to experiment with one set of bracket images before committing to a batch sequence.

PM me if you need more help Jon...
