On the technical side it was exciting to use motion capture in a special way on this project. I used our a miniMocap infrared tracking system. It consists of 2 NaturalPoint IR cameras and a bunch of retro reflective markers. The system gives you 2 channels of 6D data. 3 axes of translation and three axes of rotation.
On this particular case the point tracking metaphor was used. I rigged the character with a skeleton but then I didn't motion capture the cans in the traditional way. I created poses and the used the markers to capture data onto locators. The position of the locators were linked to the poses. depending which locator was where it mixed a pose together.
I also did the lips this way. The lips were modeled from two circles that were extruded along two NURBS curves and. I kept the history on the curves and used created different blend shapes from them for the valves.
Then I also mocapped data onto locators that mixed the blend shapes depending on their position in space.
