It is the wedding day of Susanna and Figaro, household servants of the Count. Figaro tells Susanna that he is measuring the room they are in, which the Count has given them as a wedding present. The room is situated between the chambers of the Count and Countess, alarming Susanna, because she has been the object of of the Count’s unwanted amorous attentions for some time.
