No event that causes serious harm will ever be repeated within Mercy. That is the goal of the Red Rules, activated at St. Joseph’s Mercy on February 2, 2009. Red Rules are critical requirements for safety that apply to all areas where a surgery or other interventional procedure can be performed. The purpose of the three Red Rules St. Joseph’s Mercy has placed a high priority on – surgical count, patient identification and time out – is to prevent serious harm by empowering any co-worker or physician to speak up when one is not being followed and to stop the line – regardless of rank or seniority – without fear of retribution.
