A film by Corey Rich

It's here! The Nikon D4 has arrived and it is a freaking HOT camera! For the past months I have been working in silence with an amazingly talented crew and three of the best athletes on the planet producing my short D4 launch film "WHY". It was like Christmas morning when Nikon called and described the new camera and all of its incredible features. All I could think was that this is the camera we have been waiting for. Then the gift of all gifts... "Corey, dream up a film that you would like to shoot. You pick the topic. You pick the location. It's your film... only requirement is you show off the features of the new camera." My favorite quote from the call was "You have a blank white canvas and it's up to you to fill it". I had to pinch myself several times to confirm that the call was real. Everyone involved has been tight lipped about the project for months and today we can finally begin to share some of the assets and get fired up about the camera!!!

I have always been facinated by those people that are the best at what they do. Those that operate on the edge; scientists, artists, musicians, athletes, etc. Always the question that I find myself asking is "WHY"? What deep inside drives them? What does the world look like through their eyes? Those that live on the edge, push the envelope, redefine sports and industries operate in a space all to themselves. In my Nikon D4 launch film I wanted to visually portray the beauty and intensity of the athletes doing what they do best while also delving into their heads and answering the question "WHY"? There was a very simple list of criteria used when selecting the athletes for this film. 1. They needed to be the best in the world at what they do. 2. They needed to be true role modes / heros. (In short, no ego and just simply fantastic people). Dane, Rebecca and Alex fulfill the requirements in spades!

As it seems to be with many shoots, the schedule for WHY was INSANE! In just 13 days we went from Veracruz, Mexico to Moab, Utah to Joshua Tree, California. With a fantastic crew of eight amazingly talented people, three of the worlds best athletes, over 20 pieces of luggage, three D4 prototypes, an rc helicopter and enough RedBull and ClifBars to keep us awake and moving, the entire journey was epic! Huge days, little sleep, lost bags, crashed helicopter (the D4 lived), speeding tickets (talked our way out of both ;-), wicked mosquito bites, flu, and a trip to the urgent care - all the prerequisites for a great shoot. Just the way I like it!

Special thanks to everyone that helped on this production! Dane Henry, Shawn Corrigan, Rex Lint, Mike Hagadorn; you guys are studs! Blaine Deutsch and Marina Rich, thank you for keeping us all on track, organized, fed and looking good (and Marina, thanks for loving me and being the best wife in the world). Gen Umei, Soichi Hayashi, Jason Jenkins and Mike Corrado; thank you for the opportunity! Dane Jackson, Alex Honnold and Rebecca Rusch, you guys really made the film and answered the question WHY!!! Tommy Thompson and Chris McNamara; thanks for keeping us safe and getting me into the coolest camera positions possible! Amazing team and thank you everyone who helped!

When it is all said and done by far the most exciting part is the future. It's about the collective creativity and vision of the photo and video community and what we will all create when we get a D4 in our hands. One thing is for certain, WHY was just the tip of the iceberg!

The superb outcome is clear for everyone to see here. A quick walkthrough just uploaded by Dan Chung vimeo.com/34720376 really amazing what you can do, even has an interface App from your iPhone :) .

WHY does it look so soft in full screen, is that the D4 or is it the compression? Nice shooting sir but we want to see the original 1080p version to get a better idea of what the image quality is like on the D4 relative to the 5D Mark II and Panasonic GH2.
  • Thanks for the comment Andrew,

    Most definitely the compression.

    -Dane
  • Andrew Reid plus 4 weeks ago
So why does Nikon think it is acceptable to give us highly compressed video samples? It is like putting a load of 640x480 JPEGs out there as representative of the stills.

I don't understand why we cannot download the 1080p file here either, at 523MB for 7 minutes of video it is not likely to be highly compressed, and the Vimeo clip itself only streams at 720p.

All I want is an accurate representation of video on the D4 so I can place my pre-order in confidence. Despite the talent behind this shoot and the great shots, it seems we don't have that for whatever reason.

This video is indeed amazing. WOW! Which makes it all the more puzzling why the audio is so amateurish. Sorry to be so direct. The visual quality really is top notch. It's amazing what these DSLR's can do. I just don't understand why you'd invest so much time, effort, talent and money into a project of this scope, and then couple it with such poor audio. Even an entry-level setup of a consumer recorder like a Zoom H4n + sub $150 lav would have rescued this piece. Sorry guys--I agree with most here who are blown away by the visuals. I know I am. But the audio ("half of what you see") killed it for me.
  • DSLR Films Galore 2 weeks ago
...either that or I have a malfunctioning speaker setup... ???
  • I'm sorry that it is not sounding good on your end. It sounds great everywhere I've listened to it.

Special props to Mike Hagadorn from Colorado for the Heli footage. He is a stud pilot, and was an amazing compliment to our team
  • Miller Studios plus 1 month ago
pretty sure its no cinestar though.. if you referring to the craft! its home built.. but very stunning to say the least!
  • +1 Mike Hagadorn = Ace! Man nailed it, in some insanely tight flying environments!

    -Dane
  • Corey Rich plus 1 month ago
Hagadorn is a "top gun pilot" of the RC Heli world! Also helps a ton that he is a true outdoor guy and tough as hell. Was comfortable in all environments and helped on all fonts when not flying/shooting with his machine!

The new rig I built for the project is a Cinestar 8 frame with a custom power system.

Just ordered a D4! Does the motion of the sweeping wides of the rock climber around 4:15 seem kind of glitchy/framey? And the kayaker's face during the crane at the beginning around :17? Seems choppy... I'm concerned that it may have trouble here. Anyone else seeing that?
  • Yes, I saw it. I think it's like a shutter-effect. Wish I can see the original file without the vimeo reduction of data rate. But this stuff is'nt available for download...
  • Jason Bosch 1 month ago
I've seen the original file and it does not stutter.
  • Cinesthetics plus 1 month ago
Hmm, so looks like a vimeo/youtube issue perhaps. Good to hear Jason! Any idea when we'll have an OG file for download?
  • Jason Bosch 1 month ago
That I don't know. According to Corey there will be a behind the scenes/making of coming soon, so hopefully that will help answer some questions! I'll ask though!
  • Cinesthetics plus 1 month ago
Thanks Jason, appreciate any recon you can do!
  • Rex Lint plus 1 month ago
Just a reminder, this is a compressed h.264 at 10,000 kbs. I worked extensively with the original media and it is all really smooth. No glitch y glitch y at all. I was really impressed with the composure of the Nikon codec, even in challenging compression situations like the heli pans over moving water, and jungle fly bys in lower light environments. This camera dominates over my 5d and 7d that I shoot with extensively. It was a sad day when Jason took my D4 back to Japan. Jason, when can I get that back?
  • Cinesthetics plus 1 month ago
Great to hear! Cant wait! And the files were internal or external through HDMI?
  • Jason Bosch 1 month ago
Rex, I wish I had it! All I have is this video on my work machine to get envious over. Great job on this, by the way. Looks incredible.
  • All video was recorded internally to CF. Clean HDMI was not confirmed to us at the time of production...although when we hooked up the monitor while on the jib and saw NO menus on screen the gears in our heads started cranking and our mouths watering!!!!

    -Dane
  • Corey Rich plus 1 month ago
Clean HDMI out is a game changer! Also it's worth mentioning that all of the audio (natural sound and the interview sound) came directly off the camera. The ability to monitor sound real time is amazing! We backed-up the sound to an external recorder and never used it in post!
  • Erik Naso plus 1 month ago

Did you use external hdmi recorder for this or just record internally?
  • Rex Lint plus 1 month ago
    Bumki.
I think Corey is having dinner with his parents right now so I'll jump in so he can finish his lasagna. The mission was an intense 11 days, averaging 20 hours a day, so some of the details are a bit foggy. I know all the action stuff was shot straight to card. I am also 90 percent sure the interview stuff was all on the card as well. Hope this helps.

    Rex (camera 3 guy)
  • Corey Rich plus 1 month ago
Hahhhh... just finished dinner with my folks! Mom makes one mean lasagna!

And yes, all media was shot directly to SanDisk Extreme Pro CF cards. 16Gb and 32GB

Excellent video and soundtrack. There was a segment on 60 Minutes with Alex Honnold awhile back, too. What is the track playing during the credits? It sounds like an "unplugged" version of Stay Crunchy, but I can't find it anywhere...?! And I couldn't find an album with either of the other two tracks, at all. Thanks!
  •
  • Corey Beautifully shot the video, congratulations! How did you achieved the slow motion on the waterfall shot?
  • Brandon Duran 1 month ago
He recorded at 720p to be able to record at 60fps then while editing he used the plug-in called Twixtor to let him do better slow motion and still let it be smooth
  • Rex Lint plus 1 month ago
Pretty much that's how we did it. Just missing the cinema tools step to conform 60p to 24p. This gets you to slow mo before you even begin the twixtor process. Took a couple tweaks with the settings but I think it came out nice.

  • Rex Lint plus 1 month ago
    From a video perspective.
I was on this adventure with these guys and shot a lot with the d4. I haven't shot the D1x yet but if I had to choose between my 5d and the d4 for video, the d4 dominates. So many amazing features that are missing on the 5d including: Real time audio monitoring, 60p on a full frame sensor, you can toggle between full frame and crop frame sensor quickly to punch in without changing glass, built in time-lapse, the ISO is insane, and best of all... NIKON GLASS!!!
  • Cinesthetics plus 1 month ago
It seems my wishlist has been answered. So excited for this camera...
  • Corey Rich plus 1 month ago
The D4 is amazing! It was interesting to watch Rex (a Canon shooter) get more and more excited day by day on the WHY shoot the more he used the D4. Speaks volumes! The camera really does have features that are unique in the DSLR market and at the end of the day it means as creative people we can focus more on the story we are trying to tell rather than fiddling with gear.

  • Daniel Kappelle 1 month ago
I was wondering, the slowmotion at 5:08 that's really quite slow, but according to the specs the D4 records in 30p frames at max.. ??
  • Love Story Media plus 1 month ago
Must be twixtor. But there are a couple shots that look exactly like 60p remapped to 24p...

Twixter was the tool we used. We also conformed the shot in cinema tools from 60p to 24p first to get it even slower. Also we shot this particular angle with a fast shutter speed to keep the edges defined. Twixtor seems to perform better this way.
    :>

I do a lot Slomo with Twixtor on starry skies. What it doesn't like however, are starry skies and clouds moving trough, so it is interesting to see that it worked this way for you. A great tool!

Looks like Nikon has finally arrived in the HDSLR game. Real time audio monitoring alone is worth the wait. That drives me nuts on my 7D and has cost me one take that I can't repeat. The rest is wonderfully tasting gravy. Superb job you guys, especially since it wasn't 'kodachrome' color on those days. The camera performs as I would expect, and then there are the features.

Lots of banding in the skies, but I expect that's due to the lower-bitrate of the embedded video. Any chance of a download link for the higher bitrate version?
  • Correct, Low Bit Rate web compression. Raw video the Skies are clean, codec deals remarkably well with high detail shots and gradients. Super impressed with the cam.
