Erik is a “change agent” working with homeless kids to help them realize their dreams. He is the Founder of Dream Catalyst, an organization founded on the guiding principle that all dreams matter. Its volunteer members share their gifts, wisdom and passion, thus, fostering relationships that help transform the lives of homeless children.
In this interview, Erik talks about how he was taken in from a homeless shelter by a family who treated him as a member and paid his way through college. This instilled in him the spirit for helping other homeless kids’ dream come true. Now, he inspires people to be part of a movement that helps transform lives by sharing love with underprivileged kids.
WHAT ERIK LEARNED WHILE WORKING WITH KIDS IN SHELTER HOMES
1. Every single kid had the spark in their eyes and there’s no reason they couldn’t experience the same miracles he had experienced
2. Everyone of them has something to contribute to this world
HOW TO BUILD MOTIVATION TO EXCEL IN UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN
• In general, treat them as you would your own children
• Make time to listen to their dreams
• Give them the feeling of security by making them feel they matter
• Be there for them especially on their birthdays
• Make them feel that they have a contribution to make
• Serve as good models to them
• Get to know them and give them your guidance and support
• Celebrate who they are and inspire them with your love
ERIK’S MESSAGE TO US
• DO WHAT YOU CAN RIGHT NOW - Don’t wait until you feel you’ve reached a certain success milestone
• IT ALL STEMS FROM GRATITUDE - Be aware of the dream you’re already living and pay it forward by being a mentor and adviser to a youth with a similar dream
• RECOGNIZE THAT YOU’RE ALWAYS IN A POSITION TO HELP SOMEBODY - Hold the door for the person coming after you.
