PRONEWS asked me to write a review on EOS C300 over the last year-end. To explore the camera and its potential in the shortest time, I decided to shoot a short film with it (...for, after all, it's a 'Cinema' EOS, right?). Knowing it would be a no-budget project, I wrote a simple script and called up some friends to see if they had the time to donate for the project. So this is how this little piece was born. I hope you'd enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Thanks for the answer on my question! I see them on my email. But when I get here it is gone.. ? :)
Anyway So now I now that the viewfinder is not so great..
Where didyou get that magified optics from on the sunhood of the TVlogic?

Arie, thanks! But your original comment was on different page! :-p

    Anyway...

The lens I used as a magnifier on the hood is a macro scope adaptor, Raynox M-150, attached upside down. It is actually not a magnifier glass, but a photographic lens.

So it is superb, free of distortion and chromatic aberration. But you'd better be careful not to allow direct sunlight into it; it'll burn your LCD panel otherwise.

Now the links from Vimeo work.. ;)
Thanks for the answers! This looks like a good solution.
Viewfinders and monitors.... It's allways a problem!
I know from the burning... had ones a small issue with a viewfinder of a Canon Xf305...
For the next project I might use the Canon C300. It's a feature film to be shot in Jordania. So I need something reliable!
Thanks again Akihiro and keep up the good work!!

I really enjoyed this. Lovely cinematography, composition, nice simple story.

The shots are also for the most part loaded with super fine detail that really stressed the camera and its codec. As far as I can tell, it held up wonderfully except in the 2nd shot. The blinds showed luma aliasing pretty bad (upper 3rd of frame). I didn't see it anywhere else, I guess it was just a tough shot for the sensor.

    Well done! Thanks for sharing.

Oh, yes, and we also carefully picked patterned clothing to see the moiré tolerance. And C300 held it very well. Thank YOU for the comment, Paul.

  • Fabulous. It looks like you were shooting in 30p, was that the case?
  • Raitank plus 1 month ago
Thank you, Raymond. And yes, it was shot at 29.97fps.

I downloaded your mxfs for a test grade, and am finding the footage really quite easy to work with.

Mostly though, I'm trying to imagine what the moire on his kimono (while crossing street) would look like on the 5d, or almost any other camera). Overall the detail and freedom from aliasing is simply astounding. Thanks for posting these files.

Oh yeah Barry, I too found the C300 MXF very easy to work with. And although there is slight moiré present on kimono in some shots (if you really look hard :-P), it's mostly well restrained, I agree!

Very clean, perfectly shot images - a real inspiration. Like the 29.97 look. Could you share what Custom Profile you used, or at least the starting point? Gamma 3? This is a look I'm looking forward to working with.
  • Raitank plus 4 weeks ago
Thanks Jeff, but the profile we shot this piece with was just a preset Canon LOG, no more no less. For we didn't have enough time to tweak the settings.
So you're good to go with the camera's default, so to say! :-)

    Very nice!
Did your HocusFocus work fine with the used lenses?
  • Raitank plus 4 weeks ago
Thanks, Wolfgang. Yes, HocusFocus did a wonderful job, as always, with both wide and normal lenses for Steadicam. We couldn't shoot without it!:-)
