It is estimated that up to 25 percent of homeless people in the greater Los Angeles area are living with pets. For many, it is a daily battle to decide whom to take care of -- themselves or their companions.

Dr. Tina Owen recognized this struggle and founded HoPe Veterinary Center in 2009. It is the first clinic in Los Angeles to provide free, full-service veterinary care to pets affected by poverty and homelessness. HoPe (short for Homeless and their Pets) is a non-profit that relies completely on a volunteer staff and public donations. Currently the clinic is only able to operate twice a month. Dr. Owen's goal is to turn the center into a free-standing hospital able to treat pets throughout the week.

This is a look into the HoPe clinic and the stories of those who walk through its doors.

Produced, shot, and edited by Ryan Fonseca and Rachel de Leon.
