Recorded on the Pacific Crest Trail during the 2011 thu hiking season. 159 days, 1,700 miles hiked, and ninety pounds lost. Make sure you watch it all the way to the end.

That was awesome! You framed the portraits perfectly.

Was it just me, or were you having a little more fun with the shots as the trip progressed?
  • Kolby Kirk plus 1 month ago
Thanks, Jeff! It took a lot of editing to line up every shot. Thanks for noticing.

Yes, I was getting a little more creative with the shots the further I hiked. And when I say "creative," I mean "crazy."

    So cool. I love this.

Anything you can do to entertain yourself.

Did you crop the frames a little smaller so that you could line up your eyes?
  • Kolby Kirk plus 1 month ago
Gracias! The cropping was the most time consuming of this whole project (other than, you know, doing the hiking). It took a while to get down a system in Photoshop, but it wasn't perfect.

I want to hike the PCT Oregon section but kinda concerned about my weight and condition... You mentioned losing 90 lbs (Congrats!)... what kinda shape were you in when you started, and what did you do (physically) to prep for the PCT? OH, and what was your base pack weight?
  • Kolby Kirk plus 1 month ago
Hi Ernest, I've been a hiker for awhile before attempting the PCT. I hiked about 1,000 trail miles in the 2 years proceeding my thru-hike attempt, but was a bit out of shape when I started the long trek. Going to the gym and doing a few 10+ mile hikes prior to doing the PCT is important, but most get in shape *while* on the PCT. My base weight was upwards of 20 pounds most of the time. My bag weighed 54 pounds (fully loaded) entering the Sierra.

Great job! Congrats on the thru hike. Maybe the raffia work base used suspend the camera could be shown.

Good music selection, too! I've watched this several times now. And always make it to the end. That's the best part!

Fantastic job with the video, but especially with the hike! I did ten days with my wife in the Pyrenees this summer, doing a bit more than a hundred miles and we both wish we could have just kept going.

did you carry any kind of solar chargers and what kind of camera did you use... how much did you spend?
  • Eric Hanson 1 month ago
You can account on about $1 a mile while thru hiking. Food and postage are your costs really.
