HD demo on how to set encoding parameters for proper Vimeo meady video at 720p resolution. This will give you crisp HD video ready for Vimeo upload right from iMovie 08.

This method is intended for those with source material at 1080i resolution that need conversion to 720p resolution.

The same encoding settings in QT can be applied to other applications as well.

    Great tutorial.

Rate for audio should probably be 44.100khz instead of 48.000. Sometimes when it's not 11.025, 22.050, or 44.100, it gets out of sync.

Well... I am not sure about 48 vs 44.1. Most HD cam will capture Audio as 48Khz... not 44.1Khz. So changing from 48 to 44.1 you actually risk issues with audio/video sync. I personally use 48 and never got any audio sync issues.

Is it possible to make this for people who use Adobe premiere elements 4.0???

    (like... for me....;) ? )

If there is an export using quicktime feature (as there is in adobe after effects) can you see a way to use the same settings?
  •
  • Excellent tutorial...hanks, Bernard! btw, which screen recording software are you using?
  • Bernard Maltais 2 years ago
Thank you! I am using iShowU. Great software!

I must say, at first I thought HD would be overkill for a simple "how to" video - but it's really great at full screen - cause you don't have to squint to make out the minor details, everything is pixel crisp. thanks for this!

Is Vimeo optimized for h.264 quicktime files? I recently uploaded my first video, and used a chunky animation quicktime to test how good the Vimeo compression is. I have to say it handles the colors wonderfully, but I noticed that there seems to be some macro blocking going on with the luminance. Just search for "Shenandoah National Park RAW HD" and you'll find it real quick. I personally don't care much for h.264, it always flattens out contrast and de-saturates way too much.

im using imoviehd6 to export and capture my video .my video still looks interlace even after i chose to deinterlace it. how come?
  •
  • Bernard Maltais 2 years ago
It might have to do with the version of the h.264 codec you have on your mac. Have you upgraded to the latest iTunes version?
  • hvimeo 2 years ago
i have the latest version of itunes 7.5. and still have problem deinterlacing my vieo clips.
  • Bernard Maltais 2 years ago
And you followed this tutorial... I don't know what might be wrong then. Unless iMovie 08 instal a different h264 codec than the one used by iMovie 06.

Excellent tutorial. Did you have any problems with uploading your movie clips from Canon Hv20 to your Mac computer using iMovie08? In other words, can you capture your Canon HV20 movie using iMovie08 via firewire? I really like your other videos as well. Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I'm sure many people will find it very helpful.

Any suggestions for getting a good quality 1080 video? I don't have a lot of storage so I want to delete my clips after my movie is finished. I just want a good quality video at 1080 so I can later put on Blu-Ray or AppleTV when needed.
  • James Mandy 2 years ago
Follow the same tutorial, but set your output resolution to 1920x1080 HD. Maybe use a 6 Meg bitrate although the Apple TV won't be able to handle it. You could try 1280x720 HD with a 4Mbit rate for the Apple TV and see how you go.

Of course, this is a little different for PAL users. You can set the "key frames" to Automatic, rather than specifying "24".

Do PAL users need to de-interlace their video? and Frame re-ordering?

Vimeo's HD tips says their compressor looks every 30 frames for a keyframe. So why would you set your keyframes every 24? And their HD is 24fps max. So I suppose you'd want to convert your video (or shoot in) 24fps off the get-go?

Is this true? Should recording not be set to 30P for the HV30? Or alternatively, with the 30P setting, how should we adjust the export settings differently?

um... we export using 'share' and select 'large' and just upload that file. Works fine. Why is this an issue? Am I missing something?
