J-Help is the new name for an emergency fund that's been offering assistance for many years and which became the Jewish Community Emergency Economic Assistance Fund in 2009 when a small group of donors responded to the worldwide economic downturn by setting up a fund to help members of the community pay for life essentials. Jewish Family Services, with its knowledgeable staff and strong infrastructure, has the responsibility of administering the fund and providing intake services.
Since its restructuring in 2009, the fund has distributed nearly $300,000 to members of the Milwaukee Jewish community and existing clients of Jewish Family Services. Monies are used to cover utilities, food, shelter, medical services, phone, transportation, clothing/essential merchandise and miscellaneous basic living expenses.
