  • really???? thanks....but you MUST see more! Click on the name "Philip Bloom" (2 comments up) and look through his "small" collection of films....he's got some semi-decent stuff too!! ;)
(if you didn't understand the humor in that....seriously...Philip has indirectly taught me most of what I know about DSLRs)

  • It's all CG! Just kidding...but it does look fake huh?!?

Not fake! Dubai just looked like one of those cities from Star Wars - Phantom Menace. Gotta visit. I bet the Dubai tourism people would love that video.

  • Great stuff, Aaron. I knew it would be. I've been looking forward to the cut since you announced your trip. Understandably it's not easy to find editing time for personal projects...especially having a young family. I loved that you left a lot of nat sound in -- an important detail all too often overlooked.
  • Thanks Cooper. Yeah...sometimes you just have to make time for these "side projects". Keeps you motivated to shoot for others!

Thanks, thats really great Aaron. I really loved the last view from the balcony the most :) .. Is it a public one/restaurant or a private apartment ?
  • Public. It's the Sheraton on the pool deck/bar. Manager was super cool and let me spend a few hours up there.

great surreal night shots, very futuristic-looking. nice choice of music as well.
do you have any tips on avoiding flickering? tried a timelapse after christmas, still got a little flicker and steam on the lens after an hour or so.
    anyways, I enjoyed very much!
  •
  • Thanks Tim! I'm NO pro...but I've read lots of forums about this. Best to shoot in Manual mode if possible and there are some other tricks to help minimize it, but from what I understand...you can do ALL of these tricks and STILL get some flicker. There are some plugins that can help reduce it in post. Read this discussion on the timescapes forum:

Just start play this vid and pause it on 3-rd second. And I can say, that I like picture, i like that music (i often hear it in a car). And... On 3-rd second i can say with confidence, that I like that vid. ))) On 3-rd second. ) Thanks. )
And after vid ends i want to say thanks for showing REAL Dubai. ) Amazing. )
  • Thanks so much! I appreciate your "REAL Dubai" comment too...although it has been brought to my attention that the belly and skirt dancers are Egyptian and don't have anything to do with Dubai's history but this short video was more of my personal experiences while in Dubai and that's why I chose to include them. Thanks again!

Nicely shot! Too bad Dubai is so fake. Looks like the Las Vegas of India. Oops - Arab Emirates.
  • Thanks Michael. Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, not India. But I get what you are saying. Having said that, there is much more to Dubai than what this short video shows!

Absolutely brilliant! Talk about visual story telling, nailed it! Did you have a motor on the slider or did you do it by hand?
  • Thanks so much!!! Yes. 200 series elektradrive motor from Kessler.
  •
  • Great piece. It really felt like a full experience of Dubai. I hope to make it out there in 2012/2013. Did you use a goPro on the car rig on the dunes or was that the 5d?
  • GoPro Hero (first generation) with only 1 DSLR with me on the trip, I wasn't about to risk it in the sand!
  • Makes plenty of sense to me, looked GREAT. That thing just amazes me.

WOW!! I've been seeing a lot of stuff on Dubai lately, but this video was the most enticing so far!! It increased my longing to go there!! I'm sure I will never afford such a visit, but its nice to dream. That underwater tunnel looks amazing!! And the night city lights & traffic timelapse sequences are surreal!! Looks like a movie!! Great film project!! Do you go to Dubai often? Business or pleasure?
  • This was my first time in Dubai...there on business but had a few days to sight see! Thanks for watching!

amazing stuff dude. im on the market for a dSLR myself this year. thinking 5D mkii or mkiii if it comes out in time. i know nothing other than dSLR's reallllly open up some ppretty big doors for creativity. any places u know of that i should check out to help me gain more knowledge and learn about using dSLR for video? thanks, and again. amazing. how'd u get the colours to pop like that!?
  • Used Lightroom 3 to enhance the timelapse sequences. Check out Philip Bloom's Blog: philipbloom.net/
It's where I learned most of what I know about DSLR's! Good luck...you'll love it!
