Are u guys from the area? Or, was this a long visit/multiple visit to Yosemite?
  • Dalton Runberg 1 month ago
I'm from Fresno, and as Sheldon said below, he's from SoCal and Colin is from the bay area. They made multiple trips to Yosemite for their project, but this video only shows one trip that I went along with them for.

Colin lives in the bay area and I live in Southern California, so we had to make quite the drive on these meetups. I went through a set of tires throughout this project.

So sweet! just curious, minus the camera how much does the time lapse setup cost?
  • Dalton Runberg 1 month ago
I believe you can get the rail, motor, and MX2 Controller for under $900. You will also need a camera support head, and 2 tripods. I just posted a link in the video description to the Dynamic Perception website.

i really like behind the scenes. i think the timelapse genre is still an area yet to be discovered, but this is definitely a step in the write direction. looks like a lot of fun, too. i'll be hitting up Yosemite soon as well as a few dozen others locations, see you out there guys, cheers.

love it, especially when he forgets his quick release plates, went to dubai last month and took my Dynamic rig, only to realize i forgot all my wires, what a nightmare it was.

  • Thanks for the great BTS. Did you have to get any permits from the NPS? Did you run across any park rangers who wanted to know what you were doing with that gear?

Woah!!! Magnificient!!! I love it. A perfect time lapse... and probably perfect cold nights too ;-)
I'm interesting by the filter you use. Can you tell me what it is?
    Thanks and Continue!!!
  • Dalton Runberg 1 month ago
I believe Sheldon just used a gradient filter for some of the landscape shots. Not sure exactly which one it is though.
  • Raphaël MELCHIOR 1 month ago
Thanks for your quick answer. Then, for the others shots, did you done colors correction?
  • Chris Myers 1 month ago
Dalton, It looks to me to be the LEE Filter holder...as for the actual filter, your guess is as good as mine, most likely a grad ND of some kind.
  •
  • Project Yosemite plus 1 month ago
Graduated ND filters were used on a majority of the day-time shots. Very little correction applied.

Thanks for sharing some of the background in doing this work! I've been getting more info night sky photography and wanted to ask about the brief clip in this video of an app of the stars...? Do you remember what app your were using? Thanks!

Beautiful work! Have a slider myself but what is the ball-head you have on the slider. Looks very easy to adjust.

Thanks for the insights guys! I love your work, and I think it must be so rewarding to be out in the locations for so long, getting to know them.

P.S. Star Walk is great! I have it too.

You mean you guys would rather do this than play video games or watch TV? WTF? ;-) Seriously awesome work and so great to see folks doing great creative with the 5dMkII and timelapse. Thanks for the BTS and the finished film on YozMite.

Both the documentary and HD vid were stellar. My question, however, is gear aside, what were your metadata settings for the night lapses? I've never been able to capture the night sky with such clarity, and given i'm not working with a Mark II, I don't think thats all there is.

I just came across your work and I had goosebumps come down my spine and through my legs. Do you have any tips as to how you were able to expose the night sky the way you did with your 5DMkII? Its incredible what you were able to capture with that camera!
  • Dalton Runberg 1 week ago
Lens at f/2.8, ISO was either 1600 or 3200 I believe, and ~30 second exposures. A little bit of work in post production, and there you go!

Having a clear sky (one of the benefits of being in a place like Yosemite) also helps a lot. You could see where the milky way was with the naked eye.
