The Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge was originally established to protect two endangered plant species and Lange's metalmark butterfly. The butterfly has reach a critical number and is now facing extinction. Meanwhile, proposals for new energy development around the refuge and a constant fight to keep invasive plants out threaten the butterflies chances of survival. The refuge is closed to the public due to the destructive impact visitors have had on the habitat in the past.
