At the time there was nobody providing cave diving support on Abaco and we stayed with Richie of the original Richies Rentals. Richie had a compressor and was the one who showed us the cave among other various blue holes, but this was the very best of the lot.
After many dives in there we accidentally discovered two fully articulated fossils, in the cavern zone, of a Bahamian crocodile. One of these skeletons is in the Florida musem of natural history in Tallasassee.
I always wanted to return and further explore this cave. Thank you so much for this excellent video.

Bill
My first thoughts on entering the big room were that this is really fantastic stuff. We did several dives in there and on the last dive, prior to returning to the mainland, George found that duck under in the next big room and ran line into it. I am not surprised that this cave pretty much goes on forever. We spent a lot of time trying to locate adjacent sink holes with little luck. At the time there had been a recent forest fire and the area around there was fairly free of vegetation. We were told that hunters periodically set fires to burn out the under brush. The following day we were headed up to that huge sinkhole on the north end of the Island, but had to turn back because the fires were so bad. I really wonder what the story is with that one.
We also tried to get around the restriction downstream in the sinkhole, but we did not have sidemount gear. The area where the cave descends to around 150' is interesting. It ends in a restriction which you could probably get through now with ccr or sidemount gear, but were were running open circuit at the time. You could see beyond the restriction into what appeared to be a enormous room that goes deep. I guess that this has all been explored by now. Most of these caves all go deep somewhere or the other and eventually connect with the ocean.
Not all of the caves on Abaco are so beautiful. I recall diving in one sinkhole which dropped to about 150' into a awful hydrogen sulfide mess. We had all sorts of weird symptoms that we thought were caused by funky air, but in fact are the results of H2S under pressure. Man, did we ever stink after that one.
It would be very interesting to see a survey of the cave, updated to the present.
I am really glad that this has become a popular dive spot. It is certainly one of the most spectacularly decorated caves that I have seen.
Thanks for the excellent video.
We've lived in the Bahamas 52 years and I've never seen such beauty - either above or below!

In any case, regardless of your age, please keep in mind that in order to conduct cave dives safely, a significant amount of specialized cave diving training is required. Also, Fangorn Forest is an advanced cave dive, so it also requires significant experience.
Talk to Brian Kakuk, he is a great instructor, and can give you an honest assessment.
