2. CITYHOPPER: SVEN BOEKHORST
cityhopper.nu

CITYHOPPER is a video project starring Dutch Rollerblader Sven Boekhorst. All in the name of testing out his new Rollerblade SB Pro skate.

With his customized ramp Sven performed stunts on highly recognizable touristic locations in the Netherlands, such as the Red Light District and the Dam Square in Amsterdam, as well as many other famous landmarks in the Netherlands.

The Cityhopper. Destroys non-skateable spots with ease and finesse!

cool idea, but could have been made better .
  • CITY HOPPER plus 1 month ago
Wait untill you see the documentary version. And what would you recommend in rollerblading online video's to watch that were 'made better'?
  • Peter Bender plus 1 month ago
i new, that such a comment would appear, so:

first: It's sick what Sven does, no attack, but there were many landings which were not laced perfectly, and I would expect a solid landing for someone who celebrate's himself like he does with all the medals and the glory.

    second:
filming was quite bad, to many different cameras, shaky, to many cuts, to fast.

    BUT:

its good what he does, he pushes our sport and it hopefully gets more recognition by the puplic in the future
-the question is : do we want to have that ?
  • CITY HOPPER plus 1 month ago
Allright, solid comment. I hope you might like the documentary better. The landings could be better but consider that he does only gaps and drops of at least 2 and a half meters It is still impressive, he is pushing 32 mind you. Thanks for the input. Remy.

    thanks for sharing
  • Dick Heerkens 1 month ago
Please, keep in mind that for every trick, we had like 5 til 10 minutes to prepare, choose camera positions and do the trick. So there was no time to make every trick look solid, clean etc. But thanks for the comment man
  • Peter Bender plus 1 month ago
    ok, last comment.

as a filmmaker it's always possible to match each camera's settings ( white balance, film presets, shutter etc. ) before shooting. this is not a matter of time, and an idea like this needs better camera operations.
  • CITY HOPPER plus 1 month ago
This is true, though not always did we have the time to get it done. For most spots we did whitebalance, but due to the sheer scaler of the undertakings it was not alkways an option. Either get the shot right away or get kicked out and have nothing at all. Mind you, 15 shooting days with over 15 people we had to organise. Not your average 'skate session' mind you.

Sven brought skating to a whole new level with this. An idea I personally would love if it spread around the world. The scope of the tricks is huge, after a long time, something really refreshing in the blading world.

But, I would agree with Peter Bender that the execution of the production, at least this 10min clip we have seen so far, could have been a lot better.

    1) The camera work was too inconsistent. Some shots were well framed and planned, most of them just average, and a few completely misplaced and too far from the action.

But camerawork isn't the real problem here, it's the editing.

    2) Since the concept of the tricks Sven performed in this video have a lot to do with where he performed them, I (having so far never visited the cities the spots were at) wanted to get a nice, clean, lasting shot of the maneuvre performed. Instead, there is way too much multicam editing, often just in the highpoint of the trick. It's confusing, disorientating, and drawing my attention away from what I really want to see.

The tricks are so huge, there is no need for so many cuts to make them seem bigger.

    3) The duration of the shots where the tricks are performed are too short compared to all the other shots of the spots, the crowd, the bladers and the goofying around. That makes it seem as it is all equally important, which isn't true. I wouldn't mind seeing the same trick repeated from a few angles instead of the cuts in the middle of the trick, as mentioned above.

    4) I would have preffered if the names of the locations of the spots could have been overlayed on top of the montage instead of the distracting bright backgrounds appearing way to many times during the whole edit.

The idea of Cityhopper is way too good not to deserve a better presentation to the outside world.

Hope the documentary does a better job at that than this did.

    Cheers, Mario

The documentary was cut very different than this edit. It is twice as long and has more of a build up and less quick cuts.

Love the few helicopter shot's & the indoor low light's!
Sven is on another level! Insane..

But - I actally agree with Peter and Mario. Could have been done better than this.

Filming and editing wasn't on top. Some color correction could have made this a lot better.

    Still.. I'm damn lovin' it!

    Keep it real, Emil
