This is the third installment of Cambodian Neo-Realism experiment series called "Another Day."
The first episode is "Veasna's Painting" (5 min): vimeo.com/25702543
The second episode is "Samnang's Bear" (6 min): vimeo.com/27202521
In this series, I work with untrained actors. I use real locations as backdrops. In the process, I try and capture a slice of everyday life in Cambodia.
Production is minimal. I usually work alone with one or two assistants. There is really no lighting. Props are found on location. Wardrobe belongs to the cast. No make up. Camera is entirely hand-held. No dubbing.
I speak less than 6 phrases of Khmer (after a year in Cambodia...). The translation in this project was a collaborative effort amongst the cast, myself and the coordinator.
I feel strongly that Cambodia 2012 is ripe for Neo-Realism. Possibilities are amazing. The reality is all out there and you see it every time you step outside that door. World is changing so fast around them. The cities are vibrant. Lives are mixed with real hopes, dreams and despairs. And there is a shit load of young people everywhere. And many have no idea how to make a living. All one has to do is to capture moments of Cambodian truth for the world to watch.
I would love to see more independent Cambodian Neo-Realist films, short or long. I would love to see young Khmer filmmakers tell their real feelings and portray real landscapes of their own lives. I think their true emotions will be beautiful and universal.
So if you make one, share it with us.
This is a love letter to young Khmer filmmakers.
