This home made 3D scanner uses only a scaling background, a webcam, a laser line and DAVIDSCANNER software. The system must first be calibrated, the model can then be hung in front of the background and the laser line swept over its surface. The software is able to read the variations in the laser line and compile this information into a highly accurate and detailed 3D mesh. Multiple passes can be made from different angles, and these can be automatically combined by the software. The mesh can the be exported in multiple formats, in this case as .obj for development and rendering in Rhino and VRay.
