Documenting the perfect day in February Detroit that saw the long-awaited release of the Lady (Detroit Princess) on the Detroit River.
She was made out of papier mache last year for the purpose of sending her down the river sunbathing on an iceberg. We got the idea one winter day on Belle Isle when we were throwing stones and bottles onto passing ice chunks, then ran down to the pier to watch them float by. However, we missed our chance that year, and winter passed without more ice. Thus, the Lady sat in our house for an entire year, waiting for her chance to catch the sun. Finally, this year did it. We kept watching for the right day, and learned that the river is different every day, and ice doesn't always come when it seems it should. The day we took her out to the island ended up the perfect day. No wind, enough ice, enough flow, and lots of sun.
To crown the day, she actually floated right by Hart Plaza, into the sun. Perfectly, beautifully frivolous.
