Abraj: Plural of Burj which is Arabic for Tower.

Timelapse video featuring the two iconic towers of Dubai. The Burj Al Arab and the world's tallest building. The Burj Khalifa.

Commisioned to shoot various timelapses of the Emirate by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. This is an edit I put together for myself of some of my favourite shots. Including some amazing views from 154 floors up on the Burj Khalifa.

Read more about it on my blog post here: philipbloom.net/?p=16650

Music is by Vaughan Williams: Variations on theme by Thomas Tallis

I think my favorite shot is 4:57. The sun reflecting up the tower is too cool, in all of those shots.

Some great shots, but try different music. The track you chose is way too subtle in my opinion!
  • Philip Bloom pro 4 weeks ago
that is my taste Philipp. I am very classical and let the pictures breathe rather than fast edit fast music stuff.
  • Philipp Ulrich 4 weeks ago
Absolutely fine to me, was just a suggestion.

Amazing.. The way the sun travels up the Burj Al Arab and the way you tracked it at 2:43 is really cool. That tower is so tall that the sun reflection in all your shots never makes it all the way to the top before it starts to go back down.

Brilliant piece... You make it look so easy. Can't wait to learn from you in Key West at the Masterclass... looking forward to it.
  • Philip Bloom pro 4 weeks ago
cool. Glad you are coming! Loads of timelapse in Key West!

    Philip,

    Well done!

You have created a beautiful film. I think that's the smoothest and best exposed timelapse I've ever seen and your edit, set to that Vaughan Williams piece is flawless.

I'm sure His Highness will be delighted.
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 weeks ago
Thank you Jim. Been saving up Fantasia for the right piece!

Just simply beautiful, how did you keep the light / exposure with the transition from night to day in some shots?
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 weeks ago
Hi Tom. All done with AV mode. Smoothed out in post with long exposure plug in
  • Jim Fields plus 2 weeks ago
Philip - which long exposure plugin are your referring to? Thanks! Great work as usual btw.

The day to night transitions are phenomenal. I would love to know what you're using to make it so seamless. There are infinite ways to assemble an edit like this and your chosen style exudes great maturity in your craft. Very PB! What will they do with the final product?
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 weeks ago
No idea! I will give them all the footage and I guess they will use it for promotional purposes
  •
  • David Huff 4 weeks ago
I think it is fantastic. I don't know that I would have included all of the tilt-shift shots - for me the toy-like nature detracts from the majesty of the other dramatic perspectives you captured.
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 weeks ago
Cheers David. I was unsure too...in the end I put them in to create variation away from the big wides
  •
  • Ben Shmulevitch 4 weeks ago
Brilliant as always. A great edit too, you have a lovely touch with matching the right shot with the right moment in music, such a refreshing change from people making a cut then putting any old Moby track on just before they hit render!
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 weeks ago
Thanks Ben. I struggled for days with the music. Went from trip hop to classical and back again. In the end you hear the music and go YES!
  •
  • Alex Cican 4 weeks ago
Loved the shot of the sun reflection travelling up the Burj.

And the day/night transition are great! Lovely timelapse, Philip!

Were you shooting only RAW for all the shots or a combination between RAW and JPGs (depending on situation)?
  • Alex Cican 4 weeks ago
Ok, my question was answered in your blog post. Sorry about that! :)

I enjoyed this; some very Koyaanisqatsi-esque shots of the moon and towers. Is Ron Fricke a source of inspiration?
  • Philip Bloom pro 3 weeks ago
Hi Alex. Ron Fricke is an amazing talent. To be honest I only discovered his stuff more recently through Tom Lowe.
  • Alex Turner 3 weeks ago
I agree! If you haven't already I'd thoroughly recommend watching Koyaanisqatsi; I find it beautifully evocative and the epitome of a cinematic documentary. Not to mention the Philip Glass soundtrack!

Favourite bit is the haunting shot at 3:39. Works very nicely with the music and reminds me of the shuttle launching at the end of Gattaca. Beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing!

Great results from all that work. The Sun going up the tower could probably be a symbol of Dubai for years to come, its spectacular. The Shot of sun/buildings at 1:18 could probably be the best of the lot in my view, its spectacular, perfectly executed and keeps a lot of interest. 0:24 needs just a little bit of tilt correction looks a bit down to the left same for 4:39. Being picky but thanks for sharing!

nice shots mate ... awesome locations & views ... i know a lot of time an work went into that ... sadly i think the music doesn't work for it that well .... might be a matter of taste tho' ... and i know its a pain to find the right one for every project ... i guess different typs of music for different parts of that TL would make it even better ... just saying :)

    anyway... great stuff ... cheers!
