Isn't that a bit of a fire hazard?
  • Soren Berger 3 weeks ago
It may look like it, and it definitely gives out fire-like light, but actually, because the top and bottom of the lamp shade are open, and we use compact fluorescent bulbs, the heat is not an issue at all.

The ignition temperature of just paper is 451F. I don't think a light bulb is going to start wood on fire.

That's good to hear. It really is beautiful.

    A tree for that?

much better that than firewood. That's what becomes of most stumps.

Awesome! I've been looking for a lampshade that gives out a warm glow. Mica lamps are expensive, given the work involved surely a wood shade will be as well. Love your video! Very inspiring.

beautiful lampshade but waste of so much wood....
  • Rasmus Malver 2 weeks ago
I disagree. The wood pulp can be used in an endless array of wonderful creations. Paper, fireproofing, heat and sound insulation, furniture and biodegradable packaging to name a few.

Waste isn't waste, before you decide so ;-)

Wow. Talk about a commitment to process. I got a little nervous when he was glove-less holding the big chisel in the first pass on the lathe.

That was my thinking until I read the comments above:

"The wood pulp can be used in an endless array of wonderful creations. Paper, fireproofing, heat and sound insulation, furniture and biodegradable packaging to name a few."

"much better that than firewood. That's what becomes of most stumps."

    Nice!
I Wish you could have made 2-3 miniature but taller variant lampshades out of the centre stump ;) haha

BUT cant wooden sheets be steam heated & bent to give the same? Like those chairs ??

I kind of feel sorry for that wood.

The beautiful thing with radiata pine the timber that I use is that unlike other trees it grows when ever the temperature is over 10 degrees centigrade. so here in New Zealand it grows for most of the year.
    Cheers
