Since 2003, Wash U has spent an average of $1,103,672 annually on grounds keeping costs and substantially more on heating and cooling the campus. Our sustainable landscaping plan reduces landscaping and energy costs campus-wide by reducing water use, energy use, and water run-off. To maximize cost savings associated with our plan, Wash U should review all current landscaping practices and plantings based on the following three strategies:
• Reducing turf grass and increasing native planting
• Implementing GreenRoofs
• Increasing tree planting
