Turn your speakers up to 11 and prepare to ROCK! Light Guitar Rock combines elements of photography, music and even video games into a colourful video experience. Using a photography technique called "light painting", I took an individual photo for each fret and body component on my Gibson Les Paul and colourized each image in Photoshop. Using a piece of instrumental rock music I wrote myself, I synced the images corresponding to what fret was being played on the guitar in the song. And voila! You have this explosion of colour and sound known as Light Guitar Rock!

    great idea!!
but, let me be a bit critical ;)
and please, i don't want to hurt your feelings!
that's not a 'loopy' video (what i waiting for), it's a video clip.
and the riffs sometimes don't fit in time with the drums.. but i know is so difficult to play, record, and edit in 1 week and get a perfect clip. (mine has a lot of mistakes! in fact it was an exercise for me)
by the way, i like the 1:57 part, and of course the idea is sooo cool!
    Keep up the good work!

Thanks, glad you liked it. :) Yes, I'm very aware of my lack of proper musical timing. I only had three evenings to finish the song, so I didn't have enough time to get it perfect.

I have to second the lack of being "in the pocket" with the drums. You need to make sure you've got a solid drummer/drum track first and foremost and then....DON"T RUSH!!!...when you lay down the guitar. Also the mix is a bit lead heavy. Having said that, visually it's a very appealing idea.
  • Andrew Wilson plus 2 years ago
Thanks. Once again, I am PAINFULLY aware of my undeveloped musical timing and drum track issues. I'm not a real drummer, nor am I a proper musician, and I had very little time to finish all this, so I had to slap together something that at least sounded decent so I had enough time to work I the most time consuming and challenging aspect: The video. If I do another one of these types of videos in the future, I'll be sure to spend more time and effort to make the music more professional and finalized. :)

very creative! only I think that that sound is a bit too high, you think its something to do with the compression?
  • Andrew Wilson plus 2 years ago
It's most likely Vimeo's compression. It sounded ok to me, though. Although, did notice some clipping in editing. I need to tone down the lead part a bit, maybe.

I think I'd have to quit my job to put something like this together. It would literally take me forever. =P

    This is awesome!

I like to take the "light painting" photos a lot and I have made some stop-motion videos in the past and how many frames did you take? I'd love to do this experiment but i dont think it would compare to yours. This video is sick!

To make the job simpler, I only took an image for roughly every 2 frets on the neck, then 8 for the body. That way, instead of having over 130 images to deal with, I only had around 70. The hardest part of this project was taking every single image, naming them, cropping them, rotating them, then finally colouring them.
