rad stuff. how do you do all those film burns and stuff?
  •
  • Armando 8 months ago
nice shots but i would tone down on the burn transition. feels like you just got the plug in and went nuts.
  •
  • Edgar Maguyon 8 months ago
    Thanks for the comments.

I did go a little nuts with the light leaks. The video was much more eerie before I added the "excitement" of the burns. I'll make a 2nd version with no flares.
  • Chris Crary 8 months ago
Were did you get those light flares at?
  • Dmitri Shushujev plus 8 months ago
same here... wanted to find how or where you got the exposure flare effect?

    great vid by the way

Thanks for all the nice comments! I'll upload a "flare-free" version next week when I get another 500mb, Ha!

All shot on Canon 5d2 w/ the following lenses: 24L, 45ts-e, ex-85L mkII (sold it) and 135L.

Converted to 24fps in Apple Compressor. Did a little grading in Apple Color. FCP6 for basic edits/cuts/vignettes/etc. Grain, light leaks, film reel ins/outs from layers using Artbeats Film Clutter vol. 1

how is working with the 5D? I was contemplating getting it for a while, but then opted for the 50D cause it seemed more robust. Also: how's the sound?
  •
  • David Suggitt plus 8 months ago
Love the tilt-shift effects. Makes the city look like a scale model if the original shot is from a high angle. Done a few like that in timelapse... comical and cute. The city in this flick looks depressing.... omg, made me want to get a rope!
  •
  • Lance Bachelder 8 months ago
Really cool stuff! Brought it over to my Apple TV and watched it on my 58" plasma - looked insane - certain shot of bridges and traffic looked like miniatures - it that the TS effect?

  • Edgar Maguyon 8 months ago
    Lam:

Working with the 5d compared to other vid cams? I really dont know as I have only been messing with video capture and editing for a few months ever since I got the 5d2 (replaced my 5d1); so i havent tried any other camcorders or video cameras.

Generally though, the 5d2 is a blast and really fun. Wasnt planning on using the vid feature much as I have it mainly for stills; i guess i was wrong. It has a full frame 35mm still-frame sensor (which is even bigger than a 35mm video-frame) and makes for top quality light capture. The lack of 24/25fps is a drawback. So is the lack of manual control until a firmware update; so professional vid work where you need similar shutter speeds to match other clips' looks will be hard to replicate, and also selective Aperture/depth of field.

The 3rd big drawback is the internal crap quality sound/soundboard. It has AGC (Auto Gain Control), which can't be manually turned off. So if your recording in a near quiet ambient setting (like a room) the AGC will pump up the gains and result in a nasty hiss. I tried a cheapy Sony mc908c mic, and it is very apparent. Easy fix is to just record externally and sync later in post.
  • Lam Thuy Vo plus 8 months ago
yeah, i figured that it's mostly good for aesthetics but not s good to do interview-heavy, feature-length projects. If only red cameras weren't so expensive. Though the sound-synching sounds tempting.

Anyhoo, thanks so much for this!

Do you originally come from photography? just because the DoP ist really great...nice color-grading as well
  • Edgar Maguyon 8 months ago
    Yes and thanks.

Stills and Photoshop is alot more precise with colors in post than Apple Color or Final Cut; which I find very loose in post and kinda a guessing game with grading.

Edgar, a little overlong for me, and I think you need a little more control over your shotmaking to sustain interest. (Tripod or slider or dolly or jib.)

If You are new to video though ... it is a virtuoso attempt! (Considerably more advanced than anything I can do!).

I really enjoyed this. I like your composition, Depth of Field and movement. I can't wait to see the Non flair version, I personally thought there might be a bit much of that going on, also maybe a few too many cross fades. Other than that, I really liked it!

  • Edgar Maguyon 8 months ago
I cut with final cut pro. Basically simple cits, edits, and transitions using the selective pen tool for key-framing.

In addition to adding a flare-free version soon, Im gonna replace this one with the flares desaturated a bit. I think the flares' main prob is that they are too colorful and will work better if not as vibrant.

  • MIchel 8 months ago
Hey Edgar, me again with another question :)
came back to watch it once more, now I'm wondering if you used any filters on this? ND, Pol...or did you shoot completely without filters?

Thx, looking forward to seeing more nostalgias :)
  • Edgar Maguyon 8 months ago
no filters. A GradND would be nice for landscape photography.

i shot alot in bright sunny conditions, so I had to do the lens twist trick on the camera to set the aperature (since it shoots vid in auto mode and closes the iris to like f22-f32 automatically in bright sunlight, bleh)

Excellent use of transitions (in tandem with the music—though I'm just glad I don't have epilepsy, you know, from all the color-flashes), vignettes, and superimposed semi-fades [???—what's the technical lingo for that effect, I wonder?].

  • Jamie Hannigan 8 months ago
Very lush, atmospheric mix of music and visuals. Lovely tilt-shift and use of cross-fading, reminded me of that Peter Fonda film THE HIRED HAND, but uh, less sunny. Maybe ease back on the colour blips - so many of them in time to the music draws too much attention to itself.

But a lovely piece of work, well done.

  • Borek Lupomesky 8 months ago
Nice photography, but ... I really have issue with overuse of tilt-shift lenses. I always keep thinking that I am seeing macro shot when I see those "tilted" pictures. Also, lots of aliasing artifacts in the video. But all in all, well done, no doubt about it.
  • Edgar Maguyon 8 months ago
Thanks for the tip. Should I slide the "anti-alias" slider in Compressor? How far does one typically slide it to? (for now, I leave it at 0% since Im not sure what the end results will be after a long export)
