Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it. And, yes I did make it myself.

Charlie, great looking tubes, but the shooting and editing is not up to snuff to compete with the impressiveness of it all. You could have gone really close and do some macro shots on it and then cut the footage in an unconventional way. Possibly it didn't need to be more than 3 mins either.
  • Mat Guzzo plus 1 year ago
yes, i agree. it really was impressive, but I don't think it beats the four letter words machine.

Hi Eugenia, thanks for commenting. Your posts on the HV20 forums and your website have been really helpful (despite appearances.)

I think I have produced compelling evidence that I'm a hack videographer, graphic designer, audio and lighting technician, and fiber artist.

I agree it should be much shorter; I fell in love with the songs first and tried to work within them, which is a bad idea, although I'm somewhat pleased I was able to do all of this in a (long) night.

EDIT: I followed Eugenia's advice and trimmed the video in half from 6 minutes.

Sorry I missed your sculpture at Maker Faire yesterday. Saw your video this morning for the first time. Interesting idea to knit IV tubing, but the fluid thing really makes it pop!

Beautiful, love the intricacy of your craft. When are you going to put on a live show with these?

    fb
  • Charlie Bucket 2 years ago
Hello Mr. Butcher, thanks so much for the comment. I will be showing some work like this at the upcoming Maker Faire in San Francisco -- it's a fun, crazy event that needs to be experienced.

The ultimate goal of the project is to translate this idea into a complete wearable outfit, so hopefully I can finish that and get it into a real, live fashion show.

Yeah! I want a top hat made of straws full of cranberry juice, put me on your waiting list ;0)
  •
  • love it. also the music.
  •
  • what song is it?
  • Charlie Bucket 2 years ago
Thanks! The music is "Imperials" by Ratatat and I love it too. I'm kind of nervous about showing this stuff without music accompanying it; I'm sure it will be lacking some flavor.
  • Donia 2 years ago
You should set up a little radio hidden nearby and play that whole album on loop. It'd be awesome! lol
Congrats on the show and great work!
  • hey! congratulations for the award. why did you change the music?
  • Charlie Bucket 1 year ago
    Hi Christopher
Thanks! I changed the music for the Vimeo Awards. I'm really thankful for the Amazing Rolo's help.

You can find the original video & music on Youtube.

    Very coool !!
Did you try to inject color spaced by the same lenght or time ?
I think it should make (another) great repetitive effect, if every loop are regular...
Check the arduino, really easy to use.
  • Charlie Bucket 2 years ago
    Hi Siel,
Thanks for the comment. I will be using the Arduino to control my valves and some other things -- I agree, I think that will look great.

I've just registered on Vimeo to tell you how wonderful this is, thank you for posting it.
The music selection is just perfect. My favourite part is when that dark ink flows in at 0:52.

wow, incredible, i had a similar plan, nothing nearly as amazing, with UV died water and ultrasonic mister, ive been inspired to try some way more complex shapes tho
  • Charlie Bucket 2 years ago
    Hi Will,
Thanks so much, I played around with highlighters and oil-based UV dyes (sold at auto shops, for leak inspection) in these tubes and really liked the effect.

I'd like to hear how your project goes, the ultrasonic mister and fluorescent fog sounds really interesting.

Hey Bucket, check out the BLOOD SCARF project on this site: laurasplan.com/

Maybe you two should bounce some ideas off each other ;0)
  •
  • Curtis Lawrence 2 years ago
You should try alternating colored Oils/Water, that way you can get a solid color change with little to no color bleed. Not sure if the oils would travel the same through the tubes. could be worth a test.
  • Charlie Bucket 2 years ago
    Hi Curtis,
Thanks for the comment and, yes, I'm totally with you on that. Your idea has worked well with my work in larger size tubing, but the sculpture above uses very small tubing and thus is not able to incorporate any common oils (like mineral oil) because of the high viscosity.

    I'm working on it though!

Wow, that's like SO cool! You should make a hat out of it, and put on a mannequin's head or something :) Maybe pimp the head with speakers playing music where the ears should be.

Edit: and maybe fill it with a fluid that glows in the dark :D

I can't help but think about that sitting on top of something holding multiple layers of differently colored immiscible fluids, drawing from it and feeding back into it at the same time.

Might require some careful planning & measurement since heavier fluids would sink back down quickly on dumping back into the reservoir, but I'm sure there's something there.....

I'd certainly be interested in combining my live music performances with this, and would also be interested in creating a music video featuring it.

Very nice idea. Not to sound like a weirdo but I work in an operating room and always found watching the different tubes fill with blood and saline to be sort of pretty. At times, when it enters the canister you could swear it is raining inside the room. If the drainage tube released fluid at the very top of the canister instead of sitting inside, you might get the same effect.
Look up some OR equipment up and you might find some interesting things to modify like a manifold that would allow you to hook up and titrate multiple pigments to the same line.
Again, very nice idea....I look forward to seeing what more you can come up with.

  • Jake McGinty plus 2 years ago
This is amazing, and the choice of music was perfect. Can't wait to see more with this and variations!

On the flip side of the editing comment by Eugenia, I thought your editing was spot on in putting the focus on the piece of art as opposed to overly-fancy shots and angles. The piece itself would lose value if the viewer got distracted by the camerawork.

Fantastic though, and love the use of arduino.
