Please support the Wandsworth Renewable Energy campaign!
Wandsworth Friends of the Earth (FOE) is currently part of a national campaign for a strong Renewable Energy Strategy (scheduled to be published by the UK government this spring).
We're looking for as many local community groups and businesses as possible to sign a 'Community Action' card - these will then be sent to the relevant Wandsworth MP. The goal is to show the government that their constituents from all walks of life are very interested in taking positive action related to environmental issues.
Please let me know if your organisation would be interested in supporting this campaign by signing the Community Action card (which we will bring to you!).
If so, please just send me a message through this site or by email, katharinem.lawrence@gmail.com.
Thanks in advance for your support!
Kate
Background:
- The UK Government has pledged to provide 15% of energy from UK-sourced renewables by 2020 (up from a current 4%).
- In March 2009, the Government will publish a “Renewable Energy Strategy” describing how it will deliver that 15%.
- We are asking the Government to effect a strong and sustainable Renewable Energy strategy to truly deliver its promises
Why a strong UK Renewable Energy Strategy is important:
· Help build a thriving renewable energy industry in the UK
· Help avoid disastrous climate change
· Generate hundreds of thousands of jobs, billions of pounds worth of business
· Secure a long lasting energy supply for the UK
Renewable Energy Campaign History
The campaign started in the Fall - we organised a stall on Northcote Rd. on 25 October to collect 200 signed postcards from individual shoppers, which were then sent to their relevant MPs. Martin Linton, MP for Battersea, attended the stall to show his support and have his photo taken signing our poster. A second stall was then held the next weekend in Putney, where another 200 signatures were collected.
We are now in the 2nd stage of our campaign in which we're seeking the support of Wandsworth community groups (churches, schools, the sky's the limit) and businesses.
