"HUMM" is an animated film about the territorial nature of hummingbirds. It references an experience I had, in seeing a large group of hummingbirds interact. A dominant bird would chase the other birds away from the bird feeder, and at times would fly to a nearby branch and wait for another bird to come near, so it could then attack. The birds would also hover in mid-air trying to poke each other with their beaks. The camera moves and the birds bodies were animated in a 3D environment using Maya software. The rendered frames of the animation were then printed out in a very lightened grayscale. I hand rendered with a pencil each of the printouts and created the wing animations. I then scanned each of the drawings to compile them into the final animation. This process allowed me to use my favorite aspects of both 2D and 3D animation.
