"Involvement requires perception" (Antoni Muntadas 1999)
Things that are or have become familiar or taken for granted, hence automatically perceived, can be "defamiliarized", a Russian Formalists' notion Wolfgang Iser refers to as the function of art: "the subversion of the illusions on which our perception is based." We are masters of adaption. New environments or conditions are rapidly conformed to. If we have the choice we usually go with the easier option. This decision has the consequence that the unexplored is being withheld until we proactively start searching for it or a coincidental encounter occurs.
