Featured as part of Week of Speakers 2009 (inclusiveimprov.co.uk/doku.php/events:2009-06-22-week_of_speakers), A Sea of Goons takes the absurdity and surrealism of the BBC’s The Goon Show to a new level, by playing every episode of its fifth series simultaneously over a multi-speaker system.
Created as an experiment, A Sea of Goons multiplies the energy of the original performances of Milligan, Secombe, Sellars (and the show’s other actors) to form a relentless sonic mass, blurred by the show’s structural blocks occurring at varying points of the episode, though in the same order.
Furthermore, the duration of the show varies between episodes, which leads to the gradual release of energy towards the piece’s culmination, as each episode finishes underneath the others, ending with just one episode playing, itself soon to finish.
This short video of A Sea of Goons at Week of Speakers 2009 was filmed by Scott Hewitt.
