Stop motion Tilt shift meets tracking.
This technique is an extension of my other video The Persistence of Vision.

This is a photomotion made with a Canon G9 stills camera.

- no i didn't film it from a train or bike - no roller skates!

The work looks at the sublime act of perception and tries to re-present this.

Check out my new video Drift which develops this stop motion technique even further

nice work.. how do yo do it?! :)
  • mustardcuffins 8 months ago
    thanks,
its based on life drawing and observing when moving, so overlapping images as if you were looking at a subject instead of just taking a photo of a flat plane.
so to conclude yes its lots of images

I like this ! And a lot too ! I like the way some of the buildings move ! It reminds of some works I did as a photographer, but "in motion"...It's really cool ! How did you do this ? Is it just a sequence of pics put together in post production or there's something more to it ? Anyway, it's a very good video ! Greetings from Italy !

Loving the technique, i think i get what you mean, so you act as if the building/object of focus is moving past you and your tracking it, clever! Awesome mate.

How did you make the tilt-shift effect?
  • mustardcuffins 8 months ago
it's done in AE- can't quite get a tilt shift to fit on my G9!
  • Harley plus 8 months ago
I'd love to get after effects. Too bad I dont have a $1000 on me. Great video though! I love how you shot it!

Is this only still images took in movement, really? Very smart!

  • MY_NAME_IS_NOBODY 8 months ago
    great great great!
even if I like more The Persistence of Vision, this gives you the impression you have when you see an interesting thing when you walk/run/drive. The same thing happens (at least, to me) when you catch a woman's eyes: for some miliseconds, everything stops and - even if you go on walking- everything turns around her.
  • mustardcuffins 8 months ago
great idea about catching someones glance in a fleeting moment.
  •
  • The Projects plus 8 months ago
    very sick
  •
  • May I add my voice to the chorus of praise.

How'd you get the framing so tight? How did you get the building to stay in exactly the same place in the frame?. Did you use a fixed lens?

    I am blown away.
  • mustardcuffins 7 months ago
    many thanks Sean,

i used a canon G9, very time consuming but kind of medative as its so repetitious.
because they are all stills it means that you have a large frame to play with for composition

    Really nice results! Congratulations!
How much time did you spend on post ? Did you use tracking feature to fix frames over time, or is it a pure manual monk job ?
  • mustardcuffins 7 months ago
    cheers
its a mix of manual and automated
  •
  • Maikerukun 7 months ago
Another question friend...how many stills did it take to make this?? It's so sick, i'm in love with it, one of my favs right now
  • mustardcuffins 7 months ago
nice one Michael glad you are liking it
don't know how many images it took - lots,
but its the time it takes to take them and process which really adds up!

i'm in love with this one!

i'm just watching it over and over again! can't stand it!
please tell us some more about the technique..

1.when you take photos, you have in mind the specific building to be in the same place, as possible? or what?

2.how many photos did you take for every scene; your camera has a continuous mode in taking photos? what fps?

    3. tracking the image sequences on AE?

sorry about these so many questions but i really love it :P

    thanks!

A few black edges peaked in now and again, some mix of precomposing the image sequenced footage and the "motion tile" effect should be able to resolve/hide that. Anyway, I went out and did a handheld walk around a large statue to test the concept out (nothing worth posting, but it definitely worked). Considering I'm involved with travel video production from time to time, I'll have to "wow" my next client with this trick. Thanks for the inspiration!
