On November 25, 2011, 14 fishermen from this small coastal village of Kaparatotta died at sea when their boats got trapped in gale force winds and monster waves. None of those who perished or others who set off for sea that day had received any warning of the sudden storms. These deaths at sea highlight the dire need for an effective early warning mechanism in Sri Lanka.
