Jin is an inspirational speaker and best-selling author of Major Dream – from Immigrant Housemaid to Harvard PhD. She didn’t even know what PhD meant when her teacher in South Korea told her that she would be very successful if she became one. She was then only a 6th grader living a hard life but this became her dream together with being a justice fighter. Her road to Harvard was a long and difficult one but it started with being an immigrant housemaid at 22, with only $100, and speaking no English at all.
In this interview, Jin narrates how the chapters of her life aligned themselves and led to a PhD from Harvard which, at the time, was also unknown to her. She is now one of the most sought-after speakers in Korea where she has saved the lives of many hopeless people who were on the verge of killing themselves had she not inspired them with her life story.
JIN’S LONG AND WINDING ROAD TO HARVARD
At 22, she landed in New York on an immigrant housemaid visa only to find out that the job was gone due to the long processing of her visa
She worked as a waitress instead in a Korean restaurant where she made good money
She went to college thinking it was the proper sequence for becoming a PhD while she stayed on her job waiting on tables in the evenings.
Five years from her arrival in NY, she met a Korean, got married, had a baby, and became a battered wife
Her husband abused her so that the only thing that kept her from killing him was the thought of her baby
When her baby was 8 months old, she joined the US army as a soldier
Just before she started the basic training, she had a miscarriage
She almost got kicked out of the military because she was totally unfit and couldn’t even do the basic drills
She had to send her daughter to Korea with a stranger
She became an army officer after four and a half years, ten years after she landed in NY
The military sent her to Harvard for a Master’s degree which eventually led to her dream of becoming a PhD.
THE STUFF JIN IS MADE OF
• She thrives on hardships which she considers challenges
• She’s sensitive to injustice and is resolved to fight for its victims
• She wants to serve as a model of the limitless potential in people
• She uses creativity and innovative ideas as the major power to bring out her potential
• She recognizes that her “mission to save the world” is silly but this is what gives her power. This mission is reinforced in her when, instead of being kicked out, she topped the military’s basic training over 200 other trainees
FINAL THOUGHTS
• We only have one life to live; we will die anyway so why rush to end it?
