Round and Round is a filmic light installation that combines the very earliest filmed images with the first, blocky computer-generated images and translates these into oversized pixels. The installation responds to the exceptional architecture of the KunstKapel building: a completely round, continuous wall. A construction made from 4,096 LED pixels creates a constantly shifting pattern of light and dark in the space. As the pixels (controlled by a computer) can show all 256 greyscales, clearly recognisable images can be made out in the abstract patterns formed by the big pixels. This transforms the space into a zoetrope, the first device capable of producing moving images. The only light is that produced by the installation and the visitor is literally at the centre of the artwork, surrounded by a panoramic display of fragments and glimpses of the very first form of moving images. The footage used was produced by the likes of Eadweard Muybridge; the Lumière brothers; Thomas Edison; Hans Richter; Oskar Fischinger; Busby Berkeley.
