Joseph travels to Western Province to talk to sugarcane farmers - "outgrowers" - for the Mumias sugar Company. They say that although the sugar company has brought some development, they have also brought hardships. The cane farmers are charged heavily for fertilizers, cane harvesting and transport and many live permanently in debt. Sugarcane takes 2 years to grow and sometimes is not harvested for even longer, leading to cash flow problems. Scarcity of food means high food costs.
