Siege towers are giant movable buildings – big rectangles on wheels that protect attackers as they approach the castle and give access to the tops of its walls. They are comprised of multiple fighting platforms – besiegers wait until a siege tower is positioned close to a castle, then exit via a drawbridge and attack its defenders while archers located on the highest level provide cover fire. Siege towers were generally only used after other tactics were deemed ineffective. If efforts were put into building one, they usually met with success. When defenders saw the approaching machine they frequently gave in to panic and surrendered without further resistance.
Siege are sometimes referred to as belfrys. Siege tower information based on Siege Studio siege tower explored by Host Dan Snow in Battle Castle: Gaillard and provided by Bartek Styszyński, who appears in the show.
