A much shorter edit of my San Francisco Zoo video at just 1/3 of the original length, re-made specifically for Vimeo's HD channels. Shot with a Canon HV20, edited with Vegas Pro 8. Music and video are licensed separately under the Creative Commons "BY" license.

The zoo should fire that pushy flamingo, and also the tiger has a bad attitude.
I like the pans and the zooms.

Rex, you have the sense of humour of a dinosaur. No wonder you became extinct!

I don't think that anyone disagrees with you on that. We all prefer animals to be free and live their lives the natural way. But this doesn't mean that sometimes it is not not necessary to rescue animals or whole species. And when this happens, then they need a lot of money to be taken care of. And that kind of money can only come from visitors. Hence, "the zoo".

Consider that all the animals in zoos around the world can serve as examples to people of the beauty of nature, and the need to maintain healthy habitats for these creatures. Additionally, on top of creating interest in nature and animal preservation, these animals assure us of a steady supply should they go endangered in natural settings (can be used to re-introduce the animals back into nature).

What settings did you capture/render it in with vegas? I use vegas and the HV20, as well.
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 2 years ago
1080/60i. Then, I edited with Vegas Pro 8 in progressive mode using "Interpolation" for de-interlacing in "Best" 32bit/Video-gamma mode. Then, I used the h.264 MainConcept encoder to export in 720p at 4mbps VBR (4 mb average, 4.5 mb peak), AAC 128 kbps.
  • Brad Miller 2 years ago
Oh, Vegas 6 doesn't have h.264... Thanks for the info!

For lower editions/versions than Vegas Pro 8, you will need to follow my tutorial to get the same exporting output: eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/08/11/from-dvhdvavchd-to-ps3xbox360appletv/

    Amazing quality.

I have a Sony Xacti that shoots in a very nominal 1280 by 720 at 30i (I guess it is interlaced)

You are shooting in interlaced but at twice the speed, so I guess that Sony can progressive-ize the video by interpolating full frames mae from the interlaced frames or somethign like that.

But then I don't know where the vegas "progressive mode" is.

Or how to get rid of letter boxing.

That last tutorial seems to have disappeared.

I have posted about your expertise here too....

That was such a sad story, for the people and for the cats...I think I will do a music/video mourning for the end of 2007.

I enjoyed watching your video and am inspired to try and learn how to get such good image quality - I see you have some tutorials posted and will have to study those. Great images and the music fit well too.

Eugenia. Great video!! You never cease to amaze me. I just saw this for the first time, and your composition and quality are just amazing. I am curious as to how you get such amazing shallow depth of field on some of those shots. Are you shooting in AV mode. I assume that if you are, the only way to get that is with outdoor light (or lots of artificial indoor light?) Thanks for sharing. I live in Omaha,NE where we have the Henry Doorly Zoo which is suppose to be one of the best in the country. I will have to take the kids to the zoo this summer and see what I can do!!

No, I used "P" mode, but for the birds I had to zoom in. This creates DOF.

How do you manage to keep the zoomed in shots looking so smooth when the camera is moving? Whenever I zoom right in the slightest movement looks like an earthquake.

always great color grading as usual ...

i took some footage on my new hv20 .. gotta wait to get fcp to edit it ... raw footage looks amazing on my 1080p 40" tv ..

mine looks just like yours (except no tigers) i guess zoos all look the same.

i cant wait to use hv20 properly to make a music video
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 2 years ago
Thanks. BTW, this video was not color graded. :)

ohh. i thought you color graded all your vids ?

i just bought fcp 6 .. i just wondered if you can give me some tips about what to select on the first set up screen..

i am in uk , hv20 .. usually shoot in 25p (though does this matter if i dont use 25p, will this effect the selection)

am i right in selecting hdv 1080i50 and all rates.

im about to watch 11 hours of video tutorial on it , but it doesnt mention the settings for my camera hv20.

also what settings do i need to compress it at the end stage ?

i want to shoot a music video, and be able to upload it here in the best quality , and be able to burn it to dvd to play in hd on ps3 in the very best quality.

video will be 4 mins long :-)

sorry for all the stupid questions , but will make my life easier knowing this in advance :-)

    loving your work :-)

I like susliks...:) Interesting that they have the same kind of open-air cage as in Tierpark Berlin that is on my video. By the way, "inhuman" zoos do much more for fauna in comparison with certain moralists...

Editing is rather poor, those long zooms and dissolves when no required...
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 1 year ago
That was one of my first videos. In fact, I think it was my third one, so I don't expect it to be great. Look at my newer ones.
