Rock's original Grunge band explodes live with the 1991 "Going Legit" album classic "Star",...Long before there was a Nirvana, G.e. were on the scene, boasting to all of their 'new sound and look',...Flannel sweaters and Pendletons, torn levi's and cut off 'heroin' shorts,...G.e. exploded with shows around the South Bay as early as 1985 !! Mailing their material of biographys, tapes, pictures to record labels BOTH indie AND MAJOR TOO !!In essance, G.e. 'had' a new IDEA !! "I know that there is one hell of alot of people back in the South bay who are trying to help us, embedding our videos, emailing us around and all that" says Clark Hagins today at age 44 "and i thank them,...to the few people back there in the South bay who ever went to a G.e. gig - i thank you!" Today, with one of the internet's best ever Marketing campaigns, G.e. are seen by millions, downloaded heavily at GoogleVideoCom and are a literal "success" at telling their story and gaining a new fan following as they have blasted their way - all the way from nowhere - INTO THE TOP 100 bands of all time at Myspace.com ! "People know the truth now" says Clark Hagins "guys like Phil Keegan and myself,..we deserve atleast 'some' recognition" Haggins acknowledges that it really is now 'too late' for G.e. - but that it is satisfying enough knowing people have seen the footage and heard the tunes. "we were one of the greatest bands ever - period,..we 'should' be known,..atleast for Flipper - if not for me"
Through-out the period of September 1990 til September 1991 (when Nirvana hit big with Geffen Records), G.e. played unexplanable shows around Los Angeles as a bizarre 'not heavy metal' three piece ?? with Clark Hagins upfront. G.e. often sported a gloomy "don't give a shit' attitude as they played ear-splitting ten minute versions of their song 'Hey Negrita'....smashing their instruments in beer soaked fits,....and shocking large crowds at big Festivals with their 'dangerous' demeanor that seemed near self-destructive as they cranked out grunge rock anthems like "Ben is dead" and "Star" Bassist Rick Carmody left the band in 1991 as Clark Hagins recorded the hard rock anthem "White Black Thang" alone with studio engineer Bill Krodel at El Segundo California's Jet City Sound. "There is no other band like us" says Hagins "We are totally unique,...but for as great as we were with me,..i think we were even better - and trully groundbreaking when Phil Keegan (Dr. Phil now with Northern Calif band Roughpuppy) was in the band way back when....
Things culminated powerfully for G.e. on the night of August 16, 1991 in a now famous internationally seen filmed performance at the Hermosa Saloon - where G.e. - completely with no knowledge of the music industry's shift to coming bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam- put on one of rocks greatest most riveting shows - of a grunge rock extravaganza !! a set performance for the ages !!
Says Clarke Hagins; "I have alot of debates with alot of people who try to say that 'there were alot of' Nirvana type bands before September 24, 1991,...and its true - there were alot of weird unusual 'punk rock' inspired 'alternative rock' bands that were around,...'Lots of them in Flipside Magazine,....and then there was stuff like Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls - i acknowledge that ofcourse,...but what i have also held and said is this; We in the Greenhouse Effect would go around town and write letters to back east and where-ever and we would say that 'Heavy metal' must be stopped and 'replaced',...we would say that 'alternative rock' IS gonna 'take over' someday soon - and that G.e. was gonna be the big band that was gonna get huge in the media and be the 'leader' of this -,..and FIRST OF ALL; People would laugh at me,...they would say that 'Alternative and punk' were 'never' gonna get 'anywhere' and that KNAC and Heavy metal - ya know,..bands like Poison and Quiet Riot - People would argue with me that those bands were 'here to stay' because they are hard rock bands similar to Zeppelin and the Who ,..and that people identify 'hard rock as arena big" or something like that,...i would tell people that 'that' was all gonna change if there comes along a very melodic HARD ROCKING alternative band with song-structure that were 'catchy' and people told me that was never gonna happen,..well,..Ted and me were 'making that happen' with 'Going Legit' and songs like Ben is dead, Star, and Hey Negrita !! "We" were the band that made the music industry 'believe' it could really happen !!,...but they ended up not signing us.....
"GREENHOUSE EFFECT were a small 'garage band' that told people we were gonna be Big Time and that we were gonna be playing the Forum in Inglewood,....and people would just say that 'that' kind of music would never be at the Forum,...." 'thats' all i've been saying all these years,.....AND EVERYBODY BACK IN TORRANCE KNOWS IT ! " I was one of the first guys that said punk rock could go to the big time,...I was tryin' to take it there,.." and people just laughed
"When Nirvana came along and blew up big 'that' was the vision that i had had - long before,...that everybody said would never work "
