Everything you wanted to know about the Letus line of 35mm DOF adaptors. A lot of the information in this film is relevant to a lot of other 35mm adaptors out there.

Get some popcorn. It's LONG!

I think I was slightly drunk in opening statement, took me a few takes and kept on drinking G&T each time, definitely slurring in it!

Presented, filmed and edited by Philip Bloom.

Thanks to Mum and Dad!

You could start your own Philip Bloom Museum of DOF adapters. =)

    Great job as always man.

Question : When you talk about not getting infinity and having to more the ground glass out fraction by fraction, how are you supposed to do that?
  • Philip Bloom plus 9 months ago
You pull out the three plugs EVER so slightly, making sure they are even...very tricky. Don't recommend it!

Very interesting and a fantastic device. My only comment would be that the "mini" costs more than a consumer / prosumer camera itself. Cutting the cost of that in half would help defer people from spending that money on a higher grade video camera. Just a thought.

You definitely made me want one of these bad boys though.
  • Philip Bloom plus 9 months ago
I agree, but the cost of making the mini isn't much less than making the extreme! I also recommend people just buy an extreme in case they upgrade to a bigger camera

    yep...Debussy L'apres midi d'un faune
    Mozart: Clarinet Concerto
    Holst The Planets: Venus
    Saint Saens: Aquarium

All bought from classical royalty free.

    Very informative video.

Question. I have an Canon HV30. So you woould recommend getting the extreme over the mini? Also, The rod support fits a smaller camera like the hv30?
  • Philip Bloom plus 9 months ago
only if you plan to upgrade to a bigger camera at some point. rods work with small cameras

Hi Philip, Great documentary about the Letus range. It was based on your short films that I decided to get an Extreme over a year ago and also got the college I lecture at to invest in one. The students are now producing a range of film using the Extreme. All the best George
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
    Thanks George!

    Hi Philip,

Have you used one of the Red cameras? We are putting together a proposal for a slate of feature films and would love to shoot digitally using something like the Red.

I was out film using the Letux Extreme last weekend for a promo video and came back with some great shots using the Extreme and a Sony HDR-7. The students are editing the material now.

    All the best

    George

    Philip,

At 15:58 in this video, you say: "if you're gonna use still lenses, make sure they're for [...]". I didn't get what you said after that. What was it? Esse... what?

    Thanks for the video anyway.

    Best,
    FT
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
erm...make sure they are not made for dslrs as they project smaller images and generally dont have manual apertures.

I am still confused with the whole back focus issue...I know you're probably incredibly busy, but was wondering if you could email me exactly how you check and verify that the backfocus is in focus. My email is perfectday@me.com Thanks Philip, love your work!
  • Philip Bloom plus 8 months ago
the easiest way is to see if infinity is in focus when the lens is set to infinity

You actually mastered it! Do You know anything about the Miny (www.miny.tv)? Do You know how does it compare to jag35st or E? I'm considering buying a static adapter..would You recommend it? My budget isn't too big.. Do You know anything about the picture quality loss when using a static version? Do the vibrating options shake the camcorder much? Do You know how we can prevent that?
I know it's a lot of questions and I sound like a noob but I'm trying to make the right choice but get no reply from anywhere :/

    Thanks!
  • Philip Bloom plus 7 months ago
i have a jag35 but not tested it properly yet. looks cool so far. but it is a budget tool. it isn't as sharp as the letus but is very cheap. the static one shows up grain quite a lot
  • Absolvent TV plus 7 months ago
Thanks for the reply! I'll consider buying a vibrating version then

Extremely informative and well produced Philip, thank you. These 'tutorials' are exactly what someone like me needs when starting out at the bottom rung! Quick question (I'm guessing the answer will be "whatever your budget will stretch to") but which adapter would you recommend be used for a Sony FX1? Can I literally buy the adapter and connect that to this camera or will I need anything else?
