Robert F. Kauffman of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, USA, gives an eloquent, off-the-cuff speech on the steps of a church in Grandmenil, Belgium, in May, 1990. In December, 1944, Bob Kauffman, as a 19-year-old infantryman with the U.S. 3rd Armored Division, experienced harrowing combat in Grandmenil and elsewhere during the Battle of the Bulge, as well as in the full 1944-45 European Campaign. The combat in Grandmenil involved the death of a fellow Pennsylvania soldier, Lester A. Wertman. On this occasion in 1990, Kauffman brought with him an American flag which was presented to the town on behalf of Darlene Wertman, the daughter of Lester Wertman. Kauffman's speech was followed by a translation in French by Claudine Lambert, a Belgian school teacher.
