Christian and I found a couple of days spare to visit Karijini National Park in the North West of Western Australia after a shoot for Rio Tinto. We picked up a straggler in the form of Mark Stothard from northstarcruises.com.au

Christian, Mark and I braved the excessive heat and extremely dangerous conditions to capture some of Karijini's awesome beauty.

All types of equipment was used on those two days including, Canon 5D Mk2's, 1Ds Mk3's, Canon TS-E 24, TS-E 45mm tilt shift lenses, Canon 24mm, 50mm, 85mm, 300mm, 400mm etc.etc.

A special thanks to Matt at Canon and Ben at Team Digital for supplying some of the gear used in this production.

Christian is a bit slow so some of his amazing stills haven't reached his blog yet but keep tuned on christianfletcher.wordpress.com and christianfletcher.com.au

Music again was from "Passion" by Peter Gabriel.
(Thanks Pete)

awww mike you have done it again .. Breath taking video.
I really enjoy getting lost in your productions, they all take the watcher to a better place ..
Thank you for sharing such talent.

Thanks Chas. If you take the wrong turn at Karijini you'll get lost for sure. Glad you liked it.

    Mike,
Thank you for sharing this. I just wish I could have been out there with you guys.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
It's an amazing place and very dangerous. One slip and your dead. Even scarier with a backpack and a tripod. Thanks for watching.

  • Dan Valentine plus 8 months ago
Michael, the images are beautiful and I hope to see the places for myself one day, but to be honest, I found the use of some of the lenses to be a bit of a distraction. I guess it's what we're generally used to, but to me, not quite out of perspective, but something like that.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
I'm hearing you Dan. I had the lenses to test and I put the through there paces. Some to good effect some not so good. It can be quite hard to know exactly where the focus is when viewing it from a 3" LCD on the back of a camera.

I did over do it but you live and learn. Thanks for watching and giving your opinion.

Another top job Mike. Love the use of the TS-E 45mm lens. Worked a treat. Love the sharpness you got with the video as well.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Cheers Matt. You are one of the few.
  • Kjewbee plus 7 months ago
thats because most videographers are scared of the canon 5DMKII because its so damn good (in some hands)

  • Stephen Lewis plus 8 months ago
Wow! Spectacular shots! Love that TS effect, found it delightfully disorienting, yet somehow elucidating!

  • Flemming Bo Jensen plus 8 months ago
Amazing !!! So incredible, really makes me want to go to Karijini right now, so miss the outback. Love it Michael

Tilt shift effect is great, really messes with perception of perspective
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
You should of seen my Rio Tinto video. The tilt shift was perfect for that job but alas I had to take it of Vimeo for fear of giving away Rio's secret mine technology. Looked like a bunch of pipes and rails to me.

    Thanks for watching Flemming.

Michael, the images are great (as usual), but I too found the use of the lens tilt shift effect too distracting. Sorry, just my opinion.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
No probs Simon. You dont know if its going to work until you show people. The Rio Tinto turned out pretty cool. If you get that permission I'll be able to show you.

    Mike
  •
  • Wayne Avanson plus 8 months ago
Ah, now I have to agree with Simon on this one, I found I wanted to see more of the images and less of the blur. Still, A cracking piece of work again though Michael.

    Avey
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Thanks Avey, I must admit the tilt shift did limit some of my stuff, but at least I gave it a good workout. Dont know until you try it. I'll make it up to you next time. Too bad I cant show you the Rio Tinto Vid. It exploits the tilt shift lens qualities quite well. At least I think so.

Hi Michael Nice video , but sorry I found the tilt shift annoying after a while. That effect can be used to good effect cutting in and out , but only sparingly I would suggest.

I found I wanted to see parts of the gorge in focus that I couldn't. The waterfalls where flowing into blurred pools when that nice clear bright reflective water would have made the shot.
Great video and better than I could do but as a viewer that is my opinion.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Thanks BIG MERV. You can be a hard man to please sometimes. At least thats what Christian reckons.
  •
  • Really nice work!!!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Ah! thats better. A nice comment. Come on the rest of you guys give me a break HaHa!!!
  •
  • mervfrench 7 months ago
I tell as I see it , just my opinion, although in this case I'm not alone it seems.
A guy can't like everything now can he.

Would love to see that RIO vid as I'm sure tilt shift might have a place there.

    Keep trying mate...... LOL.

    Michael,

I liked this vid alot! Of course your choice in music is superb! On this computer it was stuttering alot so I'll try it on my edit system computer in a short bit. The TS lens was maybe a little overused but I still like the dreamy quality it gave when coupled with the music.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Cheers Paul. Hope you get to see without the stutters.

  • Jonnee 7 months ago
Very great work! Thanks for sharing. I want to know: What is the name of the music?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
The music is by Peter Gabriel from the album titled Passion. It was the soundtrack to the last Temptation of Christ. Great music old but still current today.

Hey Michael .. I've just had a little look around on Vimeo at Daniele's work and others and man there's some inspiring stuff on here ( yours included ).

I can see I'm going to have try this with the mk2 one day. I can only just take a half reasonable picture some of the time, so video is a long way off for me.

What a wonderful world. Of course because of this beautiful location. But also because it is amazing what is possible now with a DSLR. Give this awesome device to great craftsmen like you and you get just fabulous footage. This is the best advertising for Canon one can imagine. I downloaded this movie. Wow. I think we will see great things in the near future. These are interesting times. Thanks for sharing with us your work.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Cant wait for a dedicated next generation Canon Vid Ludwig. But if they don't hurry up I'm going to get me a Red Scarlet. Glad you liked the vid.

Bravo. The music combined with the tilt shift had a great transporting quality. I was entranced. I notice the shooters where using a pano rig. Where can we see those shots?

GREAT job as usual! I just got my 5D MKII a couple days ago. Can't wait to go somewhere and test it out. (Oooo, Australia or NZ!!!) Did you do anything in post? Lotsa black crush here and man do I love it with these images! Any particular Picture Style (modified?)? Man, I like your style!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Oz is cheap at the moment. NZ is even cheaper. I'll do a bit of saturation and contrast adjustments in FCP. Thats it basically as the 5D does most of it for you. You will see when you use it. Get out there and inspire us back Steve.

Michael, what is your take on the Canon 5d for nature videography which for me is mostly landscapes and closeups as well as fast moving water. Does the codec and image quality hold up. It's hard to tell from web samples. I am looking to get better than the soft image of the panasonic hpx170 or hvx200. I don't mind extensive setup times as I come from a still photography background.
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Hey Mark. The 5d is far superior to any other camera I have used in relation to image quality and color reproduction. Especially for the price, however it is not a video camera as such so you exploit its strengths and dont use it for things it doesn't do well. For landscapes and closeups it will piss all over the panasonic as it shoot full HD 1080P and that makes a big difference from 1080i. The still capabilities are fantastic and are equal or better than the Canon 1Ds MK3.

Take a look at my brothers blog to see the latest shots from the 5D mk2 at christianfletcher.wordpress.com hope it will answer any doubts you may have.

PS: It is a great video of Karijini. xx

Nice job. No one's talked about your aspect ratio (2:35:1). Does the MK2 have aspect ratio guides so you know what will ultimately be in the frame when you apply a widescreen matte in post?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
I apply the widescreen matte in FCP. I do consider my framing of the shot knowing that I will most probably use the 2:35:1 ratio. The 5D doesn't do it for you. Got to go Shahin I have left my 5D on a timelapse shot and I'm worried its going to get nicked. Thanks for watching.

  • Michael Fletcher plus 7 months ago
Thanks Tom. I have been inspired by your time-lapse footage and have been mucking around with it and my new Time-machine but as yet are not happy enough with the results to want to post anything.

I need to find the right location and set up camp for the night to get the good stuff like yours. I'll share it when its up to your standard. Thanks for watching mate.

No filter I was using a tilt shift lens. Thanks for watching.

Really nice Mike. I traveled to Karijini last year for the first time. It is an awe inspiring place, as if some prehistoric town planner carved out a private water park from the rock.

It's an awesome spot. One of my favourites.

Beautiful work as usual Mike. What a pity you go all that way and then you've got to put up with a couple of geeky dudes wanting to get in the picture all the time. Still didn't detract from the beauty of the place, and neither did the tilt-shift as far as I'm concerned. Looking forward to more, especially since the firmware upgrade.

Actually, I'm a huge fan of the tilt shift lenses. It really made the video even more special.
