Ever since I was 13 years old I have wanted to tell this story. I went to art school to learn how to paint, went to music school to learn how to write songs, and went to film school to learn how to tell a story. My grandfather was born here in Los Angeles in 1910 but for his entire life was made to believe that he was an illegal alien. He only discovered that he was born in Los Angeles during the Census of 1980, at 70 years old. He started to tell me stories about his experience as a hobo when I was 13 years old, the same age he was when his grandmother's death forced him to hit the road alone, during the Great Depression, the worst economy in the history of the United States. I researched the history of California, the traditions of Mexican culture, and the history of Los Angeles while studying at Berkeley and for many years since.I also included Asian and Black characters because their experiences have paralleled my own, somewhat at odds with the kinds of stories we read as kids in comic books or saw in films. So part of my research also included the history of those mediums as well. This book can be seen as a commentary on all of the above. I also researched the musical forms and cultural traditions of Asian and Black culture in order to write songs in traditional forms, as well as traditional Americana styles. These songs are sung by these characters so they can tell their own personal stories in songs. Some of these songs are included in the video and are being recorded by many of the most respected recording artists, many I have worked with as a music video director. I hope to turn this book into a film, so this is just the second stage. In order to finish this book I will need a lot of time devoted just to painting each page, which takes one day per page (like a full time job for 3 months), then scanning them (fees) into page layout software (which I know how to do but must buy to DIY), adding text (the script is already completed and runs 140 pages), self-publishing fees (hundreds of dollars), and spending a lot of time doing grass roots promotion to get the book out into your hands (which also takes some money and a lot of time to get done). Because I wasn't born wealthy I will need your help to continue this project. Please give whatever you can. See webiste for info on giving more: rebus101.squarespace.com

David Herrera
