An abstract film about a girl's loss of her father. Not meant to be linear in any way. It's more like a poem or dipping in and out of a moment in someone's thoughts.

Simple yet deep and beautiful. Very well done as always Steven. I got into film after watching one of your short films about 6 months ago and it has been one of the best things that has happened to me. I don't know what your personal goal is when you shoot something, but you are changing lives my friend... you are creating your own little miracles one person at a time, and this should be one of the most satisfying feelings in the world.

Thanks to you I am now the owner of a XH a1, a letus and an indislider... I still have to learn a lot and you're a real inspiration for me and for a lot of others!

    I bow 2 the master...

thanks Steven. i watched it twice trying to get it. then i read the description. then i was like, Wow!
    what was your equipment list?
  • Steven Dempsey 9 months ago
Matt, I used about 5k of Sears work lights for the exteriors, a garden hose and went through about 5 different hose heads until I was happy with the quality of the "rain". Used a 1k softbox for the main keylight on Zoe inside the room and used a couple of 150w Prolights for fill and backlight as well as utilizing practicals.

Camera is XHA1 used with the Letus Ultimate and I think the lenses I used were Nikons; 50mm f1.8, 35mm f1.4 and 100mm f2.8

The key to shooting rain in the dark is to backlight it. Otherwise it just won't be half as dramatic.

Very nice and emotive Steven! And a nice lesson in cinematography: the most important thing with lighting are the shadows. Well done.

This was a personal fave in the DVX fest. Absolutely a gorgeous film (a shot or two looks like the loss fest banner?). anyways, I'm baffled this didn't score way up there - but that's show biz.

    Truly love your work.

Excellent like always. What grading method was used? custom preset?

funny how you had to "fake" the rain even though you live in the Pac NW. like filming a sunny day in Hollywood like it's never happened before.....you do it better than most.

    Yes, ironic, isn't it? :)

beautiful work steven, those rich blacks are incredible! i have the same XHA1/LETUS setup but i tend to get too much grain when shooting in low light. any tips you could offer on how to get that quality of black (or close to it) without the use of artificial lighting i.e. custom presets, shutter speed, post-production work etc..

hope to see another video up soon!

Tom, the secret is that this is not shot in low light. This was shot with 5k of lighting. The rich blacks are as a result of using the levels control in my NLE to just about crushed.
