Location: Elmwood Township Harbor
Date: 3/15/09
Depth: Approximately 15 ft
Environmental Conditions: The first thaw of the year (Air temp 50 degrees) with sunny skies. Ice is just beginning to recede around shore and docks.
One advantage of a ROV is to explore places that are “unfriendly” to humans. In this video clip a student made ROV travels approximately 80 feet under an ice shelf to the end of its tether then turns around and then follows its tether back to open water. Note the dead vegetation that clings to the underside of the ice shelf. Special thanks to the Convergence Education Foundation and the Michigan Tech High School Enterprise Program for their support in this project.
