In Search of the Miraculous (After Bas Jan Ader, 1975)

The idea for this video work was developed in Parkdale, a west-end neighbourhood of Toronto, after spending lots of time along the Sunnyside waterfront of Lake Ontario, which is inhabited by swans and geese. It was recorded in the late afternoon of Fall 2011 and completed in 2012. This work makes reference to the solitary and tragic journey of Dutch-born conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader. In July of 1975, he disappeared at sea while trying to sail from the East Coast of the United States to Europe as part of a performance project entitled In Search of the Miraculous.
